I've been sick to my stomach since watching it. I never understood how completely controlled these people were. I will never make jokes about drinking the "kool-aide" again. Will you?

it was the story of this cult that was lead by a totally sick and evil man named Jim Jones. He led his people to Guyana to escape government probes, and when pressured by our government to let relatives see their family members, he shot a bunch of people and made his followers drink or be injected with poisonous kool aide. 941 people died there.

Kjelstad:
ha ha. 300 of those people were children that were forced into a painful death and they had no choice. that's the most hilarious thing i've ever seen.

I saw it. I'm always amazed at the History Channel's ability to get the whole story. Jim Jone's son, Steve, was a great addition to the show in that he was present for the whole Jones Town fiasco and presented insights I hadn't heard of or thought of before. Many of the people there did not want to die. Jones controlled with fear.

I was around when this was news, and as far as I'm concerned, it's a current event, not history.

The only difference between the actions of Jim Jones and every other christian group is the mass suicide and the timeline. The Jones cult was only a few years old compared to millennia for all other organized religions, but they went through the same order of events: founding, growth, greed, sexual abuse, physical violence to silence the members, investigation from outside, claims of persecution, and self-fulfulling doomsday scenario.

Whether it's the "rapture" or tainted kool-aid, the godbots will do loony things when they're cornered by reality. Just look at Chicken George Bush's lunacy and Israel's nuclear posturing. I wouldn't be surprised if Bu**sh** launches a nuclear weapon on Iraq or Iran to drive up the oil prices for his corporate friends and then blows his own head off with Saddam's pistol (the one he has in his desk, in the Whorehouse - oops, whitehouse) after it detonates.

God is an all knowing God, but He gives us choices. Revelations is a powerful book. But to Christians it shouldn't be scary! Children have an age of accountability once they reach the age of understanding who God is they must make a choice whether to follow or reject God! He states in the New Testament Christians will be called away. No one knows if it will be before this time or after. But Christians will be persecuted for their belief. And in my eyes it's right! I'm not looking forward to the persecution, but God did so much for me and died on that cross with my sins...That I am more than willing to be persecuted for Christ! Killing yourself is not the way out! God doesn't reward that!

It was a great show... in my opinion, it documents the fundamental flaws in religion and how well meaning people are exploited by it. Most telling was the commentary by J. Jones' son. Very sad.

No... the kool aid jokes aren't funny.

It is the perfect example of what happens when you let one man in a "church" get too powerful. It also shows that you do not follow a man, only Christ.
