Its for security purposes.

Next time that the bank phones you up, ask them security questions. They love it.

Depositing money into an account is very different than asking for and recieving account information. The cashier was right to ask for some means of identification, as that information is for the account-holder's eyes and ears only, and all the necessary steps (seeking identification) should be taken to ensure that this is so.

The Check paid in will not be credited to the account for several
days depending on the banks policy and if you wish you can put
money into anyones account that you wish wether it is yours or
not.... now accessing account information is another scenario
which requires identifying yourself as the account holder... a very
simple process and designed to protect YOU the account holder.

Firstly, may I say that I assume by the wording of your question that you are male - if so then what's with the picture?!?
Secondly - you can pay money into anyone's bank account, but you can't withdraw or check balances - only on your own account.
I happen to believe that a lot of bank staff have a major superiority complex and have a quota of customers that they have to humiliate within one working day. I would complain about the attitude of this member of staff or steer clear of her next time!

I guess no-one is likely to object to paying moeny into an account - and indeed if I found out your account number I could go into a bank and plonk some money into your account for you - without your permission.

You may be happy about this - the bank will not ask for any proof of id - they will just take the money and pop it into your account.

IF I then asked how much was in "my" account - you might then hope that they would demand to see proof that the account is mine - and not yours!!!

You should have asked to speak to the supervisor and told them you are a customer for many years. If you were there with the same account that day, there should not have been any problem with giving you the balance.

She was just doing it to safeguard your account. Anyone can take a check in and deposit it in any account. I deposit money in my husband's separate account all the time. But the bank will want to verify who you are before they give you your account information. You may think it's timeconsuming and silly, but someday it could save your life.

Well why she was so rude... who knows, that's uncalled for, but you can deposit money into anyone's account without ID as far as I know but if you want info on anything in that account, you need to prove you are the account holder.

well turn it round... if you had given the cheque to someone else to pay in and they where allowed to know how much you had in your account, how would you feel? makes sense doesnt it. data protection and all that. i work in banking and i always say with simular questions, there are securities there to protect you!

It's because she did'nt do a proper check on someone not long ago (he was handsome & they were flirting) and this guy turned out to be a fraud & a thief!!!
So she's extra cautious now.

And she's lazy so she was P'd that u asked her to do something else.
