Is there any way to find out what program was used to encode the video before or after I download it?

Where can I find these codecs?

Download gspot. Run your file using this program and it will let you know what codecs are required.

I'd recommend K-Lite Codec Pack, but you're using a Mac, and idk if k-lite has a mac-ported version or not. Theres a program called G-Spot, which looks at the video file and tells you what the A/V codecs are, but again, that's a PC program and not sure if they have them for Macs. The most common video codecs for video files are DivX, XviD, 3ivX, and MPEG4, while the most common audio codecs are AC3, MP3, Vorbis, and AAC.
