You didn't mention if you have just begun to work out, or if you have done so for a while now. I am assuming that since you are feeling so much discomfort after doing the sit-ups, that you have just started an exercise routine. If so, it would be quite natural for you to have soreness under your arms, ribcage and abdomen, especially if you over did it. Whenever starting an exercise routine it is always best to start out slowly, increasing the number of exercises done by just a few at a time, maybe every 5 days or so. This will lessen the severity of the discomfort. Also, stretching before and after exercising is also important.

Feeling muscles you didn't even know you had. It's normal and will go away slowly. Workout every other day, NOT everyday, this alllows your body and muscles time to heal. Drink lots of water and soak in Epsom salt and warm water bath. Over time as you work out more you'll get less sore but this feeling will be around while your body gets used to using these muscles.
