Yes it's certainly a cult. Regardless of Tom Cruise's sanity (which I too think is somewhat questionable), it IS a cult.
Scientology, which questionably calls itself a new "religion", is the brainchild of science fiction writer and occult enthusiast L. Ron Hubbard. The organization claims to be able to help rid members of any and all mental constraints including but not limited to emotional scarring (from this and "past" lives) due to "engrams" (past negative experiences stored in our unconscious mind), psychological disorders and chemical imbalances (the solution is to convince members that these things don't actually exist) & drug dependence (including legally prescribed psychopharmaceuticals which counteract the effects of psychological disorders Scientologists believe to be nonexistent).
The official Scientology organization is composed of a number of “levels”. One begins as a “preclear” and works their way up. One must purchase virtually every service crucial to advancement directly from the "church" and at staggering prices. "Auditing", for example, is purchased in 12.5-hour blocks, costing anywhere from $750 for introductory sessions to between $8,000 & $9,000 for advanced sessions. Visit this link to see how $380,000 is a conservative estimate for the total cost of moving all the way up the Scientology hierarchal ladder: http://www.xenu.net/archive/prices.html These are the total costs for auditing alone: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scientology_as_a_business#Costs
At level OT III (Operating Thetan 3), some very strange and fiercely guarded secrets are imparted upon worthy members who have paid enough money to advance to such a level (and no, this isn't a joke): the evil alien ruler Xenu killed a lot of aliens (Thetans) from around the universe by kidnapping them, bringing them to earth in golden DC-8 “space-planes” & blowing them up inside volcanoes with hydrogen bombs. Scientologists believe the souls of these aliens (these souls are "Body Thetans") were captured, brainwashed and released; they then attached themselves to our ancestors (who passed them all the way down to us) & cause many of our mental & physical ills to this day. Auditing is said to “clear” us of these Body Thetans as well as the “mental implants” they supposedly impose on our minds. http://sf.irk.ru/www/ot3/spaink-ot3.html http://xenu.net/archive/leaflet/Xenu-Letter.pdf
Scientology has taken a very hostile stance towards psychiatry & psychiatric drugs irrespective of the fact that some people require medication to remain adequately functional in everyday life. The “church” has been known to withhold prescription pharmaceuticals from member (with deadly results). Suspiciously, it was discovered upon Hubbard’s death that the anti-anxiety drug hydroxyzine (Vistaril®) was present in his body, which several of his assistants would later attest was only one of many psychiatric & pain medications Hubbard ingested over the years. http://www.clambake.org/archive/ronthenut/16.gif
(visit this link to read about the uses of hydroxyzine: http://www.drugs.com/mtm/v/vistaril.html )
To be blunt, Scientology is a cult. It employs semi-legitimate psychotherapy and self-help methods to keep people loyal & convinced of its merit while it simultaneously sucks them dry financially and attempts to keep them far away from ANYONE, even friends and family, who would dissuade them from remaining in such a harmful situation. It’s a particularly greedy as well as manipulative & dangerous cult that takes its anti-psychiatry fanaticism to deadly limits. See this link for more information: http://www.lisamcpherson.org/

I studied Scientology on my own for a year about 8 yrs ago and it's a cult. Now a public cult. It's leaders follow you and brainwash you. You aren't left alone. You are to bring others into it. They use people, like Tom, that have money that can help them with their purpose. By all definition, it is a cult. Long ago, it was a small group of people that believed that God created all and they let God control it all. They did use medicines for illnesses nor went to hospitals or such. They used prayer. Family and friends would gather in their home and pray for hours and days over an ill or dying person. If they got better, it was all due to God. If they died, it was because God wanted them back. Now it's changed. John Travolta is a Scientology and I think he is embarrassed by Tom Cruise's outwardness of it. Scientologist aren't to publicize it or preach in public about it. It's to be a quiet gathering. And of course once the media gets their nose into things, all hell breaks lose. Tom probably is the one person that needs Ritalin. He doesn't know psychology any more than Matt Laurer. He only knows what his Scientology leader has told him. He has no schooling in the subject. Prayers are always needed. And sometimes medicines, pills or herbs, are needed. Even fruits and veges that God created for us are the medicines that we need for ailments.

I don't know enough about it to say its a cult but, I do know enough to say Tommy boy is off his rocker. I think he is very lucky that there is nothing wrong with that little girl because I don't think he would get her medical attention if there was and that is very sad when children have there standard of living jeopardized by there parents beliefs. And even if he believes one way he has no right to tell other people to doubt there Dr's (like he did about Brooke Shields) He doesn't have the education and from what I remember reading about him he has learning disabilities (dyslexia for sure) and who knows what he won't admit to. Must be some memory lose cause i'm sure his Mom told him not to jump on furniture.

Yes, I totally agree with you. It's a dangerous cult and it DOES fit ALL the criterium of a cult. Tom Cruise is a nut and an obstinate one at that. If you know which celebrities that are Scientologists and watch them you can invariably tell that they can be as belligerent and obstinate as Tom Cruise and as nuts. :) I'm chuckling a bit here, but any cult is not funny and really needs to be stayed away from. It's not a religion. Read all the definitions of the word Religion in the dictionary and it doesn't fit any of those.

No... No... No.. Scientology is a CULT. We have got to give up calling it a faith or a church. They have one a unmarried messianic determine, Lafayette Ronald Hubbard, who is snapshot is worshiped and who’s writings are the real and definitive phrase. They can’t be altered or disputed. They have a totalitarian institution with navy uniforms, ranks and constitution. The SEA Org, due to the fact that Ron alwasy desired to be an large Navy commander, however he was once decommissioned two times via the Navy. They have their possess intelligence division (OSA) and their possess justice division (RPF). They suppose there’s a global large conspiracy in opposition to them imposing the “us vs the sector” mentality. They suppose they're the one ones that may aid the sector. They desire to make the sector “transparent” (i.e international domination ). They consider they're the one ones that recognize the reality, however not ever inform you what that's – you have got to discover out for your self via progressing up the Bridge of Total Freedom. Lastly, they suppose in disconnecting from households and love-ones if they're adverse toward the church or its teachings. LRH first - GOD and household moment. You can not name this a faith, even supposing they did attain tax exempt fame after just about forty years of suing, combating, adjusting, reorganizing and conforming to the IRS definition of a faith. You can not name it a SECT, due to the fact that a SECT is a spin off of a real faith - like Christianity. So, the entire indicators do factor to it being a CULT. At first-rate, Scientology might be viewed a enterprise. like Anway for the brain, hiding at the back of it is tax exempt fame to make as a lot tax loose cash as potentially. It extorts cash from its contributors via requiring them to urchase LRH books, DVDs, publications and lectures to achive a promissed enlightenment. This style of "contribution" or "donation" is not like placing a couple of bucks into a set plate. It's extra like pay-as-you-cross salvation. :-)

I was briefly involved with Scientology years ago and I agree that it's a cult. As for Tom Cruise I don't know if he's shilling for money or publicity but I don't think he really believes in that rubbish.

It is a cult, but a cult is not always bad. Personally, I also think Tom Cruise is a nut, but the first amendment allows him to believe freely.

By the very definition of a cult all religions are cults. In it's original form all a cult was is a cohesive group bound together by a common set of religious beliefs. It's only those in the more common religions who decided to butcher the english language to make it mean some outside weird group. And really what's any weirder about their belief than the beliefs of a group of people that believe in the ressurection of a man 2000 years ago that was conveniently witnessed by no one but his followers.

What we now know as Christianity was first viewed as a small cult of the Jewish faith. Who is to say how Scientology will be viewed in 2000 years?

As the saying goes....if it was created by God, it's a religion, if its invented by man its a cult. Catholicism and Judaism are in the first group; ALL of protestantism is in the latter group.
