She does it almost every night (even in the middle of the night ). It wakes me up. She sleeps at the foot of my bed. She periodically does it at other times, night or day. Is she nervous? Is that possible?

My dog does it too. Usually in the middle of the night when I'm trying to sleep. He's a big dog too, complete with big dog tongue and big dog slobber. This has been his routine for 10 years now and there is absolutely nothing wrong with him. Have you tried looking under his coat to make sure there is no skin irritation? Also, if this is a behavior that is new or out of the ordinary for your dog, and vet visit will help solve any issues, or at least, put your mind at ease.

Sounds like allergies. My Golden would lick then chew her feet till her hair came out.

Check her food. Wheat is usually the #1 culprit for allergies. Try a lamb and rice formula before you do any sort of medications. Brush her at least once a day and that should help with the licking.

A food I recommend is Nutro (nutroproducts.com) all natural and they guarentee their product. So if it doesn't work you get all your money back. Summer hasn't had problems for the past 3 years.

Good Luck

Allergies is the correct answer, you can ask your vet for NeoPrene, its a powder that you put between their paws and keeps them from licking their paws. You put in on 2 times a day for 2 weeks then move to once a day and eventually you shouldn't need it anymore. There are also topical sprays you can get at Petsmart and Petco, but I find this to work successfully. My father-in-law is a Vet, this is what he suggested for our dog.

My 12 year old Lab does the same thing. She's done it for years. In my dogs case, she is just cleaning herself like a cat does. She'll even lick the bottom of her paws and wipe them all over her head and ears.

I have a friend who's dog does the same thing and it turned out the dog had an allergy to the grass in there back yard.
Hope this helps???
I would ask your Vet though.

It could be an impulsive behavior. It's bad because they can cause Lick Granulomas which are like open sores that are very hard to cure. My Rottie had it all her life and I had to constantly be on the watch for it.
