After reading 1 Corinthians 16:1,2 and 2 Corinthians 9, I would like someone to give a verse from the New Testament that says I have to give a tenth. If it's not in there, why do you do it?

It isn't there. The tithe in the Old Testament was used to support the temple and the Levitical priests. The New Covenant believer is no longer under the law. We are told by Paul that we should give as God leads us to give. It may be a tenth, it may be more. But it is very clear we should give to help those in need and support where we are being "fed" the word.

The New Testament teaches you to give an offering unto God.

How much? Well the Bible teaches us that everything belongs to God. Yet we are to be responsible with the blessings that God has given us to take care of our families etc.

So many people will use the Old Testametn concept of tithing to give people a starting point of 10%. Jesus upheld this teaching during his lifetime.

Yet we are commanded to give, and give joyfully and sacrifically. So if 10% is not a sacrifice perhaps you should give more. IF 10% does damage to your ability to handle your responsiblities then give less. The latter would only be a case when you have made some poor finacial decisions and are seeking to correct them.

Yep, you can start with Hebrews 7.

Christ fulfilled the law of Moses or otherwise known as the Law of sacrifice. That changed the method of sacrifice to no longer be of blood but it did not fulfill or remove the law of tithing! Where wold you get an idea that if it was not given in the new testament it is not necessary?

I might question if the church I was giving it to is The church of Christ, having his authority, and the Priesthood power as outlined in the old and new testements as being necessary to officiate over ordinances, or whether their organization (having apostles, prophets, ect.) is as is stated as necessary in the new testement, or that their teachings are the same as those outlined by Christ and taught by his apostles, but not weather the law of tithe is valid. Were the ten commandment removed at Christ's coming? Through out the scriptures prophet tell us that God is unchanging. His laws an truths are eternal. Just because the method of sacrifice was altered, as it was symbolic of his coming, it did not change the law of sacrifice.

You know, God put the Old Testament into the Bible for a reason.
I'm assuming that you want proof that we should tithe from the New Testament because you are under the impression that Jesus' death abrogated ALL of the laws and commandments in the Old Testament. This pervasive misconception is wrong. Jesus said that he came not to destroy, but to fulfill the laws. The laws that he fulfilled are those that we don't have to do anymore because of the death of Jesus, namely, many Levitical laws that call for specific punishments and sacrifices when we sin (since we can just ask Jesus for forgiveness when we sin, we don't have to obey those laws anymore), and the feasts on different Sabbaths. These laws, which God gave the Israelites, do not include ALL the laws in the Old Testament. Therefore, the Old Testament command to tithe still stands:

Mal 3:10 Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.

If you still have doubts as to whether Old Testament law is still in effect, note that there are some laws that forbid certain things only in the Old Testament. For example, the only law that forbids the prostitution of a daughter is only found in the Old Testament. If Jesus abrogated all Old Testament laws, and this law is not in the New Testament, does that make it legal now?

Lev 19:29 Do not prostitute thy daughter, to cause her to be a whore; lest the land fall to whoredom, and the land become full of wickedness.

Finally, note this. You may be operating under the premise that all Old Testament law has been abrogated. Well, there is Biblical evidence that the law of tithing is not just an official Old Testament law; it, in fact, precedes Old Testament law. The Bible says that, even before God gave the command to tithe, Abraham tithed. When Abraham met Melchizedek, the priest of Salem and also God in disguise (story is in Genesis 14), Abraham did a peculiar thing: by faith, he gave Melchizedek one tenth of what he had!

Gen 14:18 And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God.
Gen 14:19 And he blessed him, and said, Blessed be Abram of the most high God, possessor of heaven and earth:
Gen 14:20 And blessed be the most high God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand. And he gave him tithes of all.

The fact that Abraham gave tithe to God before God commanded it in Old Testament law shows that the commandment precedes Old Testament law. Therefore, even if Jesus abrogated all Old Testament law, which you think to be true, the commandment to tithe would still remain, because Abraham's tithe shows that it is a commandment that predates the law and is therefore untouchable. God requires it not because it's just a law he set down for the Israelites, but because it is a law, period.

I can prove it! Carefully read the following verse and you will discover that Jesus commanded tithing:

Matthew 23:23
"Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices—mint, dill and cummin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law—justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, WITHOUT NEGLECTING THE FORMER (emphasis added)."
Matthew 23:22-24 (in Context) Matthew 23 (Whole Chapter)

God will bless you if you tithe. Do you not want to be blessed by Him? Test Him and see if He will not pour out to you so many blessings that you will not know what to do with them all!

May God richly bless you!!!

it clearly says in these verse that we give according to what we suppose to give and that gove gives a cheerful giver.
jesus also clearly denoted what an elderly lady gave, that she gave 100% of her poverty while the rich withheld what they could give. the Lady definitely gave more.
in malachi it calls people who receive tithes as thieves, but it also says that those who do not give are thieves because they too rob god.
Now-a-days, if you give some money to a church the people who receive it in the name of God, but buy themselves diamond rings and limo's are more likely to be stealing from their congregations and probably do not give to OTHERs of their wealth and prosperity. Ive been taught that Jesus was given a life time of wealth from the 3 wise men, maggi, kings, and when he finally gave it all away feeding the poor God blessed the flock with the miracle of feeding 5000 people.
Tithing has the foundation in the old testament, not only does it say to play 1/10 of the increase, but it also says that you OWE God 1/5 more if you pay late.
However in the greater Kingdom of God, All things are owned by God and 100% will be paid to the kingdom, but it wont be money it will the harvest and the industry of your wealth that will be given and then redistributed as the righteousness of the community deserves.

When they gave a tenth it was taxes, money for the public and the king. Samuel cautioned the people if you ask for a king that is what will happen. So he charged a tenth of everything they produced. It was taxes.
Now that we are already paying taxes to someone else it is ridiculous to give a preacher 10 per cent. It is like paying twice.
Nothing in the bible says to do that. Why should he get a tenth and your family not have enough to live on. doesn't make any sense.
How do you know this man is from God. When you pay the money does God get the money? How do you know this man is representing God? Or even that he is spending your money wisely. Does he give a tenth? No his money is tax free.
Most Evangelists on TV are on the Forbes list of 400 richest men in America. These little old widow ladies on social security is the greatest givers. who barely have enough to live on.
When they send it there money I think that is a sin on the preachers part. So you are doing him an injustice when you sacrifice for him. Heaping fire on his head.

So I take it you have read Rory O Moore's "The Tithe that Binds"? It is a thought provoking book in which he clearly teaches and backs up w/ scripture that tithing is under the law and we are under Grace. If a person is going to keep one item of the law then they should be ready to keep the WHOLE law. I choose Grace giving as lead by the Holy Spirit.

I have included Rory's website:http://www.preparehisway.com/

His book is free of charge and very well written. He has some other very good teachings on his website.

Also check out David Eells teachings also available free of charge for the asking or to print:http://www.americaslastdays.com/

Be blessed. Good post! Gives everyone something to think about.

P.S. I do not "tithe" but I do give as lead by the Holy Spirit.
(I cannot recommend Rory's book enough. It really is a good read and very liberating)

tithing is a result of thankfulness, not responsibility.

If you give with a giving heart, God will give back. If you give just because you think you have to, you will only percieve it as the church taking advantage of you.

My church cheers when the pastor says it's time for offering. Lol.

It's a condition of the heart. You want blessings? Give the first fruit to God and he'll take care of the rest. Just trust him. Don't look at circumstances, focus on God.

"The tithe" as part of the Law is no more applicable to us than making a pilgrimage to Jerusalem three times a year is. It is mentioned in the New Testament only a couple of times, generally in the context of rebuke to the Pharisees concerning fastidious observance of the ceremonial Law.
We are not under the "law" we are freed of the "law" "law of the pharisees" with all their ceremonial hypocrisy, "if you are freed by the Son you are free indeed" We are under the "grace" of Jesus Christ who died to bring us to salvation. His walk on this earth and His teachings tell us to give to those who need, He did not command a tithe.
