Was it the entertainment? Food? Chocolate fountains? Photobooth? The view? What made this wedding stand out above all the rest?

Besides good food, a wedding I went to had a "martini" bar. It was the first time I had seen one and it was awesome!!

The best wedding receptions are when they're a true celebration of the marriage. Meaning, everyone there is HAPPY to be there and gets along with the others. Two things must happen for this:
1- The people at the wedding/reception shouldn't have doubts as to whether the bride and groom are making the right choice. It's hard to get excited when you don't see the couple lasting long. When the couple is truly in love and everyone is happy for them, then the whole wedding seems much more memorable and special.

2- Everyone should get along and be social. This why big familes throw good weddings. If people don't know each other, they're going to want to get up and dance in front of each other or walk around meet people. Weddings always suck when the bride's family barely knows the groom's family.

I was a groomsman for an old college buddy and I worried about being bored at the reception because I didn't know his family. But when I hung out with his family for two days straight before the wedding, it was blast to celebrate with them on the big day.

Many people on here are saying they like short weddings the best. When I've been to weddings where I don't know any one and I doubt the potential of the new couple, I really want the wedding and reception to be as quick as possible so I can go do something else.

Also, good food, open/free bar and are important, too.

One of the best weddings I attended was held at an amazing reception hall overlooking the Hudson river. The couple were married as the sun set. The cocktail hour was probably the most elaborate I've seen. They had tons of cold displays of seafood, fruit, cheeses, hand rolled sushi, then 10 stations of hot hor devours like pasta, hibachi, portebello mushrooms etc. The meal itself was served in several courses, an appetizer of crab cakes, choice of two salads, intermezzo of sorbet, then choice of fillet Mignon, lobster, or chicken, followed by a trio of desserts. The wedding went on and on into about 2 am with a ton of dancing. What I liked best (other than the food) was that the reception wasn't overly structured. Meaning, they didn't stop every few songs for this or that dance, tossing bouquets, garters, etc. They just let the reception "happen." Also, there was no videographer in our faces the whole time, and the photographer was very unobtrusive.

They had one room that was all seafood. Sit down dinner. We were seated at a table where everyone knew each other. Were put up in a very nice hotel the night before the wedding and were served breakfast on the day of the wedding. Strolling violin players during dinner. It was over 25 years ago, and still the best wedding I ever went to.

It was how appropriate it was for the couple. The bride & bridesmaids were barefooted (yes, it was in a church). They exchanged vows under the arbor her dad built for her. Instead of a unity candle (lots of kids in the wedding party), they poured water from individual goblets into a glass bowl (now on their table). Finally, she walked out the the "Hallelujah Chorus" & waved to everyone.
She is a very nice, unassuming person & this wedding was not really extravagant, but it "fit" the couple so very well.

The open bar!!!! and a cocktail time with apetizers before a sit down dinner.

The view was superb! We could see the whole Manhatan island from there.

Sorry, but chocolate fountains are as cheesy as the chicken dance.

Good luck

my sister and her husband got married on the beach in South Carolina. it was at a country club beach house, not really a house, but a really big deck with a bathroom facility, parking area and access to the beach. the deck looked out to the ocean and was surrounded by palm trees and sand grasses, and they had lovely tropical flower arrangements all around and a nice floral arch that the bride & groom stood under. the entire thing was set up with the ocean/beach/palms as the background for the wedding, but all the guests were safely up on the decking (instead of trying to walk on sand in high heels & dress shoes). was just like a movie!

The couple and their families reserved an entire inn for all the guests for the weekend.

You know how awkward it can be when two different families get together for a wedding? Well, a weekend together like that one sure gets everyone better acquainted, so that by the reception party after the ceremony, we were all quite relaxed and having the time of our lives!

Friday night we had a poolside pig-pickin' (for those unfamiliar with the term, that's a cookout done right!) with live music (crossover CW-Rock'n'Roll band, something for everyone). Saturday morning, breakfast buffet open for hours, then pool parties with open bar. Oh, and catered lunch. Saturday night rehearsal, followed by rehearsal dinner followed by night club. Dancing and carousing until bar closing time!) Sunday morning, breakfast buffet, church service for any who wished to attend. Sunday afternoon -- the grand event, the wedding! Sunday evening -- reception party in enormous ballroom, with sit-down dinner followed by an night of partying with a kick-a@@ band and a bottomless bar!

Oh, and limo and shuttle service to and from everything!!!

Now, that was a wedding weekend to beat all!!!

It was my own wedding... The best thing was that it was pirate-themed, so we got to do all kinds of crazy stuff like fire blackpowder cannons, sing bawdy songs and drink rum all night. The flowerboy was dressed as Bootstrap Bill Turner, and we swore to be with each other til the Davy Jones Locker does us part. It was a blast!

a combo of the open bar and dj - everyone had a great time! It was my brothers wedding and it was just so fun. The entire day was great, all us bridesmaids spent the day getting all dolled up, we all sang and danced in the limo, the moods were soo good that it just made the entire night enjoyable and unforgetable.

It was gourmet buffet style, so people could choose anything they liked. It was at an estate, so people could roam the grounds after dinner and mingle with friends in nice weather. So much better than the cliche catered wedding in a hall.
