Ok, more than a few possible scenarios, but here are some of them.
1. Since the birds were stupid enough to wait for the man to fire two more times (or maybe they were unable to flee), I'd say there are 20 birds left in the tree. Waiting for the Reaper. Or whatever passes for one amongst crows.
2. The 20 survivors flew away, while the 10 dead crows fell on the ground, thus leaving 0 birds on the tree (dead or alive).
3. Some of the 10 birds fell on the ground, and some remained on the tree. Dead, of course.
4. Some of the 20 survivors flew in terror, while some hid in the tree trunk. Plus, some of the dead crows fell on the ground, while others remained on the tree.
Etc.
Yes, I do have a habit of making things too complicated. Never cared much for Occam's razor.

Not enough info: it only says the farmer counted out 30 birds, not that there were only 30 in the tree. I therefore have to say: 10 less birds than before.
Oh! I think lupis got this one- and the answer reminds me of the movie "Beautiful Mind" and how Paul Bettany's character had a daughter playing near pigeons, which was supposed to be a clue for the audience...
