not much info provided in your question, but here goes :D
An Operating System, like Windows XP, will enable you to save files and run programs. If connecting to the internet you will need a Firewall program to stop hackers and a Antivirus program to stop downloading viruses. Other software like Photoshop can be used to edit photographs you have uploaded to the computer. An office package is also a good idea so you can write documents, essays, letters etc.
Hope this helps :D

Depends on what you want. But, Try Windows XP Pro, Office XP, not Office 2003 just yet. And choose an email client you like.
Then go from there

Windows XP of course, and Norton Antivirus to keep things from getting fouled up. It has saved me several times this year alone.
