OpenOffice is just as good as MS Office and for one thing it is FREE. Yes it will do everything that MS Office will do and some what more. You never have to pay for up dates as well. Besides all this, it is not all bloated with other addons like MS Office is.

The choice is yours. http://www.openoffice.org/product/index.html http://www.openoffice.org/about_us/new.html

You should have no problems with compatibility between OpenOffice and Microsoft Office. We've had to create files in OpenOffice, save them, and use them in Microsoft Office. We experienced no problems here at my company. The link below will show you some things you may need to do to the files when going between OpenOffice and MS Office.

I used Open Office a few years ago and it works fine. The only problem I encountered is that some of the formatting in Word and some of the formulas in Excel did not translate exactly. Maybe that's been fixed now, but as far as reading the formats, they were interchangeable.

I'd experiment with it for a while and see if there are any differences now.

OpenOffice will save your files as .DOC files if you do a "save as". Or you can set OpenOffice to use the .DOC extension as default. Then other computers will read them as MS office Word files.
