My 4 month old puggle has been having diarrhea during the night. Her stool is normal during the day but for the last 3 nights she has been waking up and needing to go outside 2-3 times a night to go diarrhea. Does anyone know what might be causing this? Also, any methods of making her better? Is this a cause for concern and should we schedule an appointment with the vet? Thanks!

Some additional details:

Our puppy is up to date on all shots and vaccines. She just got her last round of vaccinations about a month ago.

We haven't changed her food.

She sleeps with us at night.

She doesn't get any table scraps.

So I'm still baffled. We are going to see how she does tonight and if she still has it we'll call the vet. Thanks for the answers!

It sounds like anxiety. There may be conditons that are making her nervous/anxious. Without knowing the particulars I can't really offer any real advice.

Don't give the dog any rich treats at night-dry food only. Feed a high quality food from the pet store-I like Fromm's Gold

Go to the vet-take a sample of the diarrhea and normal poop-have the vet check the samples for worm eggs. This is a common cause of diarrhea and is easily treatable.

Worse case scenario your pup may be suffering from Parvo virus which can be deadly. If the diarrhea really stinky (smells like death warmed over) or is bloody you could possibly be dealing with parvo.

You may for the next few days give your dog a bland diet. You can get it at your vet or you can make your own. Boil hamburger or chicken (to get rid of the fat) and mix to 3 parts steamed white rice-you can use instant rice.

You should schedule an appointment with the vet and make sure that your puppy does not have any worms. If you are feeding your puppy a grocercy brand food like pedigree, it might be better for you to feed your dog a premium brand of dog food that does not contain corn, wheat, or soy....like natural choice ultra holistic, or blue. You can find these brands of dog food at petco, or petsmart. Also, you should make sure that your puppy has not been going through the trash, or ingesting anything that would hurt her. Your best bet would be to take her to the vet and get her checked for worms, if the diarrhea has blood in it then get her checked for parvo virus, and if she does not have it make sure that you always get her all of her shots including her parvo booster shots.

I think you might be feeding her too late at night and she hasn't had time to digest it, is locked in the crate, gets nervous and then her stomach starts to churn and ends up with the BIG D. Try feeding her around 5:00 and then plenty of exercise so she can have a bowel movement or two to empty out before bedtime. She should be eating earlier in the morning as well. For puppies her age a schedule should be more like. Get up and go out and potty 6-6:30 a.m. Play a bit eat about 7:00 potty Morning activity and nap time Maybe a small...small lunch....potty...naptime Play....eat around 5:00.....Play...Play Potty...Play....Bed time Get her switched over to the good stuff not the cheap Walmart variety.......A little cottage cheese...Tablespoon on 5:00 meal might help too. If you ever find blood in the stools contact your VET. immediately. Good Luck!

try feeding it a wheat free diet. (this is harder than it sounds, many dog foods contain wheat or just list 'cereals' on their ingedients list.) my dog was getting bad diarrhoea when we got him from a rescue home, and like yours, worse at night. sometimes there was blood and mucuous in it too. antibiotics didn't work, but the vet suggested an intolerance, and we found the symptoms cleared up very well when we started feeding him a wheat free dog food from pets at home. apparently wheat intolerance is a growing problem in dogs.' james wellbeloved' foods also very good for dogs with sensitive stomachs.

Yes please schedule an appointment.
Is is after she eats? Did you just change her food?

She could have a food allergy and need a different food. Worms can cause the runs as well. (but would be the runs during the day as well). If you just changed her food, you might have done it to fast. (need to slowly start mixing the two foods together)

Could be nerves...is she with you at night. If not she might get nervous away from you which can cause the runs as well.

GOOD LUCK!!

If it's only during the night, you should really discuss this with your vet. It could be early signs of separation anxiety.

If she's "away" from you at night, she may be getting anxious. Try letting her sleep near you (Put her bed at the side of yours, or sleep with a blanket for a night then put it in her bed so she smells your scent).

I would stop feeding your pup after 4pm. Maybe change it,s food to a higher grade and do not feed any table scraps. Also take it outside for a long walk before bed and have it checked for worms

that happened to my dog too. The only way to make her better is take her to a vet.
