im getting my braces off in a few weeks and was wondering about permanent retainers. Are they comftorable?Do you feel them? Are they bulky?I would like to know the answers to those type of things...and also is it really hard to floss with them?

I am very hesitant to get the permanent retainers only because i already had to deal with 2 years of having metal stuff in my mouth, and dont want another thing,BUT i really dont want my teeth to shift if i dont wear my retainer..

I have a permanent retainer on the inside of my bottom teeth. I have had it for about seven years. It does not get in my way but it is hard to floss in that area. You have to get special floss so that you can get the floss between your teeth and through the retainer so that you can get out any food that may have been caught in there while you were eating. Overall, I like my permanent retainer because my bottom teeth have not shifted at all since I had my braces because of the retainer. On my top teeth, I just had a regular retainer that you could take out and put back in, I wore that for 3 years and then I stopped wearing it and my teeth began to start growing a small gap in the middle. I feel like the money for the braces was waisted because only if I had a permanent retainer on the top also then my teeth on the top would just as perfect as the bottom. I recommend getting a permanent retainer if you do not want your teeth shifting later on in life. If you are a teenager or a young adult then you should know that your teeth will shift without a permanent retainer because your jaws will still be growing, but if you are an adult then I really would not worry much about it.

The fixed retainer is probably the best thing they ever came out with, except for peanut butter and jelly sandwiches of coarse. You don't forget to wear it, it doesn't get lost or thrown away, the dog doesn't eat it, and so on, and so on. The only problem is it takes some getting used to having one and flossing. But your a pro at that after having braces for 2 years! And if you flossed with your braces like you were suppose to have done, then you've already got the technique down. The wire is attached to the back of the front teeth, tongue side, with a smooth, white, small dot of filling material that sticks the wire to each tooth. You just have to still thread the floss through and under the wire. Just don't let your tongue play with it to the point of making it sore or breaking the wire. You'll like it a lot better than the removable one. I know your excited! Good luck and Congrats!!!
