They have no power to take away sin, The only way that is done is through the blood of Jesus Christ, The Apostles of Old had the power to remit sins, & that was done by baptizing in water in the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ for the remissions of sins, Those remisssion of sins is sins that is done in the body, & not in the soul. The Pope & Catholics don't even teach the Apostles Doctrine, they are so far away from the truth.

No one!! I was confirmed in 2005 and know that confession is nothing like what you see on TV. You sit face to face in an open room, privately of course. And it is more like a counseling session. I guess you could also call it Christian tutoring as well. It's like, "I did this. How can I avoid doing it again, etc".
Forgiveness comes straight from God and you have to directly ask for it. But a priest praying for you in addition to your own prayer has got to be a good thing
If priest could really do all that, then what was Jesus for.
Before I became Catholic, I thought this too. Maybe that idea was actually promoted at one point by some people to scare people into going to chuch.
Their are so many misconceptions about catholics. I should start a TV show and call it Catholic Myth Busters.
To me, this idea is as logical as those people who say that you do not have the holy spirit because you never speak in tongues, you know, flop like a fish on the ground and babble incoherently. If that is real to them, then go follow your heart. They might have the holy spirit but I don't think speaking in tongues is the proof.

Jesus and His Word teach...
You are saved by faith and not by works (Ephesians 2:8-9).
All who rely on observing the law (commandments) are under a curse (Galations 3:10).
Salvation occurs at the moment you believe the Gospel (Ephesians 1:13).
Jesus purifies sin (Hebrews 1:3).
You can know for sure you are saved (1 John 5:13).
The sacrifice of Jesus is finished (John 19:30).
The Pope and his church teach...
You are saved by faith plus works.
Obedience to the commandments is a condition for salvation.
Salvation is a process from baptism through purgatory.
Purgatory purifies sin.
You are condemned if you claim to be saved.
The sacrifice of Jesus continues in daily Mass

Many Evangelicals have trouble with the idea that a priest can "forgive sins." Part of this is simply a misunderstanding of the position of the priest. Article 1442 the Catechism says:
Only God forgives sins (Mk 2:7) Since he is the Son of God Jesus himself says "The Son of man has authority on earth to forgive sins" and exercises this divine power "Your sins are forgiven" (Mk 2:5, Lk 7:48) Further he gives this power to men to exercise in his name (Jn 20:21-23)
The distinction is that God does the forgiving, the priest has simply been commissioned to carry this out. (2 Cor 5:18) The apostle is sent out "on behalf of Christ" with "God making appeal" through him and pleading "Be reconciled to God" (2 Cor 5:20
God Bless You

Nobody did. That's the whole reason Jesus Christ died on the cross. The Bible says He is sitting at the right hand of the Father making intercession for us. If He is interceding for me what do I need a Priest for? I can confess directly to the Son of God! Millions upon millions of people are being deceived into thinking their sins are forgiven because a man tells them to say so many "hail Mary's" and go on with their lives. It's sad, really when the truth is so simple.

To anybody who doubts this category should be more strictly controlled, just take a look at the idiot neo-atheist troll answers above.
To answer your question John 20:23 is the basis for their belief ("If you forgive the sins of anyone, they are forgiven; if you withhold forgiveness from anyone, it is withheld.”) However, this does not really apply to priests in the way they wish it to. See, for example:

When Jesus resurrected, he told his apostles to go and get people to confes their sins to them. Why would Jesus do that? In the bible, it says "go and confess your sins to others" and the priest doesn't have power to take away sins but it helps people kind of feel better about themselves and they are not supposed to do those offenses again.

If memory serves it was King James- and later reinforced by King Henry the VIII.
It was based loosely upon the blessings given by John the baptist of washing away past sin.

If you aren't Catholic (which your "question" implies), it really shouldn't matter to you.
They believe that their rights and powers were part of and/or derived from the original church.
"Take away"? I doubt anyone else would agree with your phrasing.
