Can anyone give me advise on obedience for these dogs as she seems a strong willed girl.I have another small dog and she gets on great with her.I was brushing her and she growled at me so i got her by the neck and shook her and told her no and she backed of. She lays on her back for me to have her belly rubbed ,maybe it is me not understanding her. No nasty comments please i just want to do right by my dog

I OWN AN AKITA (DOG)

I found that teaching the sit command was best until my dog was five months old was enough. At seven months to nine months I trained my dog to obey all commands. Sit - Stay - Come - Lie Down etc. This is how I did it. (great choice of dog by the way)
Sit: Push your dogs bum down and say sit. As soon as bum reaches floor give treat. Continue this until the dog does it without you pushing the bum.
Come: Get your dog to sit. Then walk away from dog by four foot max. Show dog treat and say come. Keep doing this until you get over the other side of room.
Stay: Get dog to sit (give treat) Then say stay whilst showing palm of your hand to dogs face. When it gets up say NO and put it back in sit position. Then say stay. If dog stays for five seconds give treat. Then do the sit - stay - come commands until the dog can do all three.
*****ABOUT WALKING YOUR DOG******
I purchased a harness from: ForDogTrainers on internet also purchased a leash from there. I then purchased a collar from Ebay USA (Amish Leather) They have great collars. I then purchased a standard choke collar and another standard lead. Okay - My dog has harness with lead. choke collar with lead (the choke collar goes ontop of the collar I purchased from Amish leather (means the choke collar is at top fo my dogs neck which is the weakest part of the neck) So in affect I have dual control. This has helped me control my dog 100%.
If your dog is doing something you don't like whilst walking don't shout at your dog or hit it do this: Pull on choke collar and step into dog. point two fingers at dog and say SSSSSHHHHH sound. Then say NO! REpeat this and your dog will grow to understand what you expect. This is from the dog whisperer.

My husband had an Akita/Chow mix and she was very Strong willed. That is just how the breed is. I would definitely suggest some obedience training before it is too late. Where do you live? I can find some places for you. Also, here is and Akita website that tells you more about the breed. There are links on the side for more info. Good Luck to you and your beautiful dog! http://www.akc.org/breeds/akita/index.cfm

Akitas are strong-willed and stubborn but smart. Get her into some obedience training now.

You should really take her to obedience training classes where you are involved in training her. She needs to learn that you are the Alpha dog, and these classes will teach her to obey your commands. We have a yellow lab that was a huge pain in the rear until we took him to obedience classes. Now his main goal in life seems to be to please us and do whatever we tell him to. It's great!

I've taken many stubborn dogs through the different courses offered at PetsMart. Not only do they teach YOU how to better handle your dog, but it's great bonding time for the two of you.

This is pretty common with this breed... they like to be the boss. You put her in her place and she responded, good! If you're looking for good trainers in your area here's a site that will help you find on nearby: http://www.apdt.com some on this site *may* even specialize in certain breeds. Good luck, and remain the Leader of the Pack!!
