It's not just asians but i've seen many asians having one of those electronic translators. My question is, people have learned and survived even when those things didn't exist. You just need to study a bit and then you can ask , make questions if you don't understand something. Even make drawings or diagrams to get the point across. Being dependant on a little gadget is weird. I'm studying Japanese too, and if I went to Japan i wouldn't buy one of those ever. I would ask or figure it out little by little. I don't know, but i feel these Asians who often carry one of these translators are not going to learn much if they rely on those things.

It's no different than carrying a dictionary. It doesn't mean that they are not trying to speak English, but when a message needs to be conveyed clearly, and they do not know the words to say it, electronic translators can help.

Actually, compared to Americans, people in Asia are MUCH more likely to actually try to learn other languages. Americans often think they can travel anywhere and expect everyone in other countries to know English. If you go to Asian countries and see the Americans there, you'll find them saying "Does anyone here speak English?"

I'd rather have someone approach me with a translator to ask a question than to come up and speak to me in a language I don't know, just because they THINK I should know it!

Knowing English is NOT a demand to get a visa for the US. It could be plenty less difficult at the immigrants in the event that they did no less than try to gain knowledge of a few English. But like I stated, it's NOT a demand. I am no longer speaking approximately viewers both. Permanent citizens do NOT have got to recognize English. Anyone can get an immigrant visa to the US, and no longer recognize a lick of English. The ONLY time an immigrant is needed to grasp English is that if they want to come to be a US citizen.

Some people who travel do not necessarily want to learn the language of every single country they go to! I'm sure they know the basics, but I think it's very polite of them to try to communicate as best as possible. Study a bit? Well, you need to study a bit more than "a bit" if you want to know more than "Hello, please, help, etc".

I mean, a diagram? Don't you think it's just easier to do what they are doing?

I don't agree with you. Having or not one of these electronic dictionaries doesn't mean that you will learn more or less the language. I believe it's matter of time on finding a quicker answer. How do you process the information depends on each individual. Good look with your studies!
