the A700 is a 7.3 Megapixel camera. it has 12 MB of internal memory so even with no card you can still take some photos.
You can take photos at 7, 3.2, 4 and 2 Megapixels. More megapixel will affect the size of the file for each photo, so with lots of megapixels, you will fit fewer photos on a card.

You can use xD card from 16 MB to 2 GB. 1 GB is a good choice.

in the instruction manual for this camera (http://www.fujifilmusa.com/JSP/fuji/epartners/bin/MANUAL_A700_Eng.pdf)
look page 117.
it reads for a 1 GB card, you should be able to take between 294 (7 MPixels photos) and 7995 (0.3 MPixels photos)

I suggest you use the 7 N mode that gives roughly 1.7 MB files so it's 586 photos per 1 GB card.

Storage Capacity Camera Type
This is what you should get:

Camera Pixels / Number of pictures

2 MP / 1190
3 MP / 905
4 MP / 762
5 MP / 595
6 MP / 476
8 MP / 317

On a 7.3 MP camera it should be about 370.

It depends on the settings you use. The higher megapixels the less photos and vise-versa.

Look on the bottom of page 22 in the owner's manual. There is a chart that gives rough aproximation.

Multiply the 256MB values by 4 and that should be close.

Most camera come with a small usb cable and software. If not, then you would need a card reader. Radio Shack have one on sale right now for $10!
Thats what I use for my finepix 20.

Using your best setting at 7 MP, ngufra is correct; in that you should get about 294 shots. You can get more by lowering your setting, but don't sacrifice quality for quantity.
