Why don't you visit as many martial arts schools in your area (look in the yellow pages if need be) and try out the one that you like best? You need to try as many out as you can so that you can choose the one that you feel most comfortable with.
By the way, I was 34 years old when I started Karate. I now also practise Iaido. It's one of the best things that I've ever tried.

Good luck to you and don't give up!

I call bull on you dude.

YOu didn't lose 369lbs with excercise without diet involved, and if you had any clue about weight loss- which you absolutely must have, then you wouldn't need to ask- nor think that excercise alone would bring you the rest of the way.

If you are looking for a type of martial art that is the most physically gruelling then I would reccomend capoeira.

While there are serious doubts about its effectiveness as a martial art, there is no doubt that it takes a LOT of physical fitness (and will get you there) to perform what they do show you.

If your primary goal is gruelling excercise and are not worried about the figthing applications, then capoeira is certainly that.

If you want to be albe to learn fighting applications as well, then I would find a good sportative martial art that focuses highly on conditioning such as boxing or muai thai (san da, kickboxing, etc.). BJJ also has schools that are intense workouts as it is a grappling art and there is emphasis on conditioning.

However I still think you are full of it but because I'm in less bad of a mood than I was earlier, then I'm bieng unusually nice.

Wow..congrats. I'd just peep out any school that seems to give a good workout and has a friendly atmosphere. I took tang soo do, which helped me lose weight, but the instructors mentioend somethings to me that made me realize its more dependent on thes chool rather than the art.

They held classes at an aerobic pace, but it was ultimately up to you to see how hard you wanted to go. During kicking drills, if i would tire out. It was no problem for me to just take a few steps forward to keep in line, but not be throwing the kicks.

The instructors had mentioned to me that there were some schools in the area that were not very nice about doing this though. Even if you had an injury, if you showed up to class, you were expected to keep up the pace. School i went to would work around that. Although our typical class size was 5 people and 2 instructors.

I think more importantly, you shoudl want to do the martial arts. I mean, jogging or hitting up the treadmilll would probably be jsut as good for your weight loss, but i personally get bored out of my mind doing things like that.

If you like tennis, see if a buddy wants to go play with you, or things like that.

Good luck

Congratulations on loosing 369lbs! I would choose a martial arts you enjoy and you don't know if you will enjoy it until you visit a school and do some trial classes. If they don't offer a free trial, then move on to the next school. Don't buy into "paid trials" either, most will allow you to try it for free if they see you are interested. I take American Freestyle Karate which is really a combination of taekwondo, karate, boxing, self-defense and fitness so you can't go wrong. Everyone is different and it's hard to say what style you will enjoy and if you don't enjoy it, you won't want to go to class so go visit all your schools in your area and pick after you have tried them all!

I try Jiu-jitsu for month, and lost 8 pounds. My weight was 155 LB, so 8 pounds is a lot for me. Now, My weight is 147 LB. First the time in my life, I have a six pack ABS. Everyone in the class were losing weight too, not just me. I am strongly recommended you this form of Martial Art.

Give it a try, and good luck to you! Thinkmaan

Almost any style of martial arts will work to lose weight as long as it is a style that involves punching, kicking, and/or grappling.

So, the choice should be which art appeals to you. And, which types of muscles would you like to STRENGTHEN while you lose weight.

Again any of these arts would do, but if you want to strengthen your core muscles, a Grappling art (like Jiu Jitsu) would be great!

Also, a very interesting art form you could study would be any of the traditional shao-lin Kung - Fu styles (Mantis, Hung-Gar, Eagle Claw, Long Fist...etc...). usually in a traditional Kung-Fu class, you spend about 30-45 minutes warming up and doing traditional excercises BEFORE you begin to study techniques. This warm up is a very good workout, and also NOT boring...you WILL lose weight and get strong by doing this.

I highly recommend Northern Seven Star Praying Mantis (Tong Long or Tang Lang) if it happens to be taught in your area. If not, any traditional Kung-Fu would be awesome. And (as I said before) Grappling/Wrestling/ Jiu Jitsu is also excellent.

my opinion:
try kickboxing. maybe start doing tae bo. then move on to a regular martial art (kickboxing or karate). if you still have 120 to go, i suggest taking it lightly first, so that you avoid injury. but any type of martial art should give you a pretty good workout. either karate or even tae kwon do or tang soo do? unless you want to continue with the style you said you studied a long time ago. either way, it should help you in getting a great sweat!

i agree with assbopper and bluto about the bull.if you have lost all this weight you would know how important diet and excersize is,you would also know there will be limitations on what physical activities you can do.you will have a hard time with any ma. i'm not saying don't have a go i'm saying don't expect it to be easy.and if you are fair dinkum i congratulate you, your obviously serious about changing your life and being fit and healthy.(please god dont strike me down for my next comment)i would suggest you do tae kwondo do.(i'm still here)not for the ballet kicks as you wont be able to do them, more so for the physical side of it.mainly because tkd is more readily available and you wont feel out of place or discriminated against.ppl can be cruel as you know.you'll be out there doing something which is the important thing, you can always do a real style later. i dont agree with your friend, but if this is what you want to do and it helps you, go for it.

I practice & teach Yae Kwon Do & recommend it highly. Sonce wi emphasize kicking, it burns more calories that most other styles. Contrary to what some people think, it is also good self defense.

Congratulations on tour weight loss & good luck losing the rest. That takes a lot of will power.

Congratulations on the weight loss . My advice to you would be to go to the schools nearby and watch the classes , that will give you the kind of information you seek . Otherwise any style could help you . They all have physical fitness aspects .
