So I used to have chronic constipation. I recently, in the past week, started eating lots and lots of fiber and drinking plenty of water and I also take Metamucil. I crap enough...the only problem now is that my stools seem to be very big, and therefore kind of harder to eject. What could be the reason for this in my new diet?

1. sounds like the rest of your diet isn't good, fast food or excessive cheese/milk products can back you up.

2. normally if hard, almost bubbly like it means your colon is working over time squeezing it thru its process and this normally comes from stress.

3. due to past chronic constipation your colon is use to work extra hard and all the extra squeezing removes the liquids from the stool which is what allows it to move and come out easily. once the fluids are removed it becomes hard and can be painful to eject.

4. I would back down on the excessive fiber, water is good to flush the body and can be helpful if your colon is removing too much. I would also focus on stress items in your life and remove them, health is more important than any job, car, house, cash, woman, etc. I would also look at your diet, maybe stop eating 3 meals and break it down into 5 meals, allow the body to not have so much in the colon at one time. And look at the very foods you are eating, fried, fast foods, excessive cheese/milk can all cause issues.

5. if it continues, I would see a gastrologist

It may be due to excessive fiber. Fiber is indigestible and will be excreted. Cut back on the amount of fiber you ingest - discontinue the Metamucil, for instance. Then see how this works for you.

One person suggested adding a stool softener. Instead of adding something else, I think you need to subtract. And increasing fiber will not loosen your stools.

It is the fiber increase, make sure you take a stool softener, even taking a vitamine E pill daily, should help.
