Please make suggestions on the best 37 - 42 inch TVs to purchase eventhough I will not have the cable company's HD package.

I have seen Akai 37" (with a DVD player attached) and also Vizio, along with others.

Does anyone own any of the above sets, or have her reviews on them? I could not locate on consumerreports.

I do not know that much about these sets, just that these sets are what others are buying. Although I will purchase a set, I will order the HD package that is offered by cable company. I just want a bigger screen.

Which set will give me the better/best picture without have the HD hookup?

I thank you in advance. - Curt

Everyone has their opinion on which TV is good but you're the one that's going to have to live with it so I'd choose by seeing which one looked the best to me.

If you plan on watching regular, non HD cable then I'd see if the store can hook up non HD programming, as I hear some LCD units don't display non HD programming very well.

The AKAI has got brilliant picture and in my opinion, it is much better than the other brands on offer at the moment.

Most critical aspect, unless you will be watching this in DARK room, is how bright it is, and the refresh rate for movement. Both are areas where LCD's are a bit poor.
