My wife's was about $750 and it's beautiful. We had talked about it, and I even took her around looking at rings to get an idea of what she liked. She actually found one that happened to be on closeout for $750 which was regularly about $1500, so maybe you'll get lucky and she'll pick something like that out (if you decide to take her looking with you). She still doesn't have to know when you plan on proposing or how, so taking her looking around doesn't necessarily ruin it.
By the way, bigger isn't always better when it comes to engagement rings. Remember, this is something that she'll have to wear for the rest of her life, so my wife felt like something fairly small but very beautiful was right for her. Just depends on one's taste, I suppose.

Whoever said up to 50k is moronic.
I make 36k as a teacher and just bought an engagment ring for $7,700. I've been told I spent too much, but I have another buddy who spent about the same.
There's no need go above 10k and honestly most young couples spend between 2-4k.
If you buy from a good jewelry store, they'll let you upgrade to a more expensive diamond later on down the road and give you a good deal. This is a great anniversary present.
Advice- Don't go cheap and buy at Sam's Club or anywhere online. When you buy from a galleria or other jewelry store, you've paying extra for services that you'll need down the road. It's worth it to pay a little more now.
Congratulations and Good luck.

Well Buddy, you can do the typical American thing and and go in debt to spend $10k on a nice ring. Then you can do like many friends have done in the past and pay it off for ten years. By that time, with interest that accrues and credit card rates, you will have paid close to $15-16k on it. My advice: go with a smaller sensible ring with higher color rating in the F-G range and SI1-Si2 clarity. There are some online websites that are cheaper than retailers like Kay and other overpriced "mall stores."
People put so much emphasis on getting a lavish ring when they get married. I got a cheaper ring and now live in a million dollar home. I can tell you which one my wife and I care more about. Half the time she forgets to wear it cause it scratches the kids (toddlers).
Hope you don't overspend and regret it later like so many today. I would say spend $1500-$2000 to get a decent ring! You can always upgrade at your ten year, if you are still married. If not, you will not have "wasted" too much on a ring.

It varies depending on the metal and stone that you choose. You can find some nice stuff in the $100-200 range, and even less. However, given your income, I'd say you can afford about $1000-2000 (some rings can go for considerably more than that). Just make sure you get a top quality rock if you're going to pay that much.

Don't really go for size, go for color and clarity. You can buy a 1/2 carat and if its a GORGEOUS cut and color and clarity it will shine like a laser beam under nice lights. THATS what catches peoples eyes.
I was lucky enough that my husband bought be a big ring, its over 2 carats princess cut with more princess and baguettes on the sides (princess and baguettes by the way r one of th least sparkly cuts, I wouldnt have chosen it for that reason but its still lovely)but people don't notice the size of my ring at least not right away, they just notice that I have something that is blinding them on my hand. Then they grab my hand to look and they see what the ring looks like...but I tell you EVERY SINGLE TIME its the sparkle that catches the eye before the size...so go for that and make sure to unveil it in th best light possible :) Be happy and as we Italians say Figli Mascule!!!!

It depends on where you get it! If she's not the vain and greedy type you can get a beautiful ring from the jewelry department in wal mart. My engagement ring came with the matching wedding band and it only cost $175 at wal mart. It's very beautiful, and I love it. It's the fact that he bought me a ring and proposed to me that mattered the most to me!! go to walmart.com and look at the engagement rings. There are more expensive ones than the one he chose for me, and cheaper ones. It's not just the ring, you have to find the perfect romantic location and timing is everything. Good luck!

The average engagement ring should cost about three times the amount of what you make in a one month period.

One rule of thumb is 3 months salary. However, you can get one from a few hundreds dollars from Walmart to several thousand at a nice jewelry store. Find the one that's perfect for her and let the jeweler know what your looking to spend.

the general rule of thumb is the ring should cost as much as you make in two months, so you really have to save up. it really depends on your girl. if she is a simple girl, you could get away with spending less. but if she isn't, maybe go two and a half to three months of pay. congratulations!
