I'm considering making the move from one coast to the other, so I'd love to know - what are people really like on the West side?

It is not that they are mean or "pricks" it is that they are fast paced individuals I moved from Cali. LA area to North Carolina and was told I was rude and I later realized from making that friends there than explained it to me I was just "getting things done so to say" example when you go to pay for your gas it you will say $30 on number 2 and this is all not Hi soandso how is your day the people behind you probably did not even make time to stop and get gas so they have to go and will not like the hold up, it is harder to make friends everyone is set scheduled. I hope this makes since if you have on having a busy life both places are right for you then now consider the weather differences ;)

I loved NY when my son lived there, his friends were great tour guides. As a native Californian, I'd say Venice and Santa Monica.A little phoniness going on there but mostly from people from out of town. Lots of actor waiters, large Hispanic population on the outskirts, nice people. Rents are pricey.

The Venice / Santa Monica area is an "ultra-lefty" part of L. A. so you have all the issues that go along with that type of community IE: silly restrictive ordinances, transients & panhandlers roaming around, etc.

People in the beach cities of LA are friendlier. I went to Malibu and found the people there to be friendly and laid back. One of the girls there said hello and greeted me Happy New Year, even though she didn't know me pretty well. I don't know about New Yorkers in general but after watching the movie "Borat," I thought otherwise.

i have to say new yorkers are friendlier. i haven't lived in ny, but have lived in la a long time. people in la are simply phonier. they all have big smiles and act like they're your friend, but only if they want something from you. most people in la never acknowledge me, much less talk to me. la is the only city i have been where nobody ever talks to me or smiles. don't believe everyone saying la is so friendly. the difference is new yorkers have enough respect to speak their mind, whatever it is, while angelenos will rarely speak their mind, and when they are nice, it's usually because they want something out of you.

I lived in both. Santa Monica has friendlier people by far, but they are much less interesting. So you have to give up something to get another thing.
