I have a male American bulldog that is now a year old. He farted constantly (especially at night) until just recently. They were loud and smelled aweful. Now he hardly ever farts. I am not sure if it has something to do with the puppy food because it seems like the problem has gone away since we put him on normal dog food.

Some dogs are gasier than others, but such horrible smell can probably be improved by changing her food.

Some dogs tolerate some type of proteins better than others. Keep your dog on a high quality food and try gradually changing the main protein base. I fostered a dog who was highly reactive to any fish based food. We had to leave the room when he let a fart out! I cut out the fish-based food and switched to chicken based protein and the problem was solved. Some dogs digest chicken better than lamb or the other way around.

So check out what is the main ingredient of your puppy food.

You may also want to try a food formulated for "Sensitive Stomachs" with highly digestible proteins. Your vet may be able to recommand something.

If the problem persists, I would suggest having your dog checked out by your vet. Just in case...

Hope this helps.

Most usually it's what they are eating that causes this. You should be feeding a high quality dog food. If you can buy it in a grocery store it usually is not the best although some grocery stores are starting to carry some acceptable dog foods. If it list by-products you know its not good. Do you know that by-products are beaks and feathers and stuff like that? Cheaper foods are full of this stuff. Your dog can't stay healthy on that. I know what I use is very good but if I said what it is somebody would object I'm sure. Do a little research. Ask your vet.

It sounds like she may have a sensitive stomach. I would suggest using a better quality puppy food, something with natural ingredients like Yucca schidigera, flaxseed, and psyllium. These ingredients help with digestion and can help control gas. Some even decrease breath and fecal odor. There's also ingredients called probiotics ("good bacteria") and prebiotics ("food" for probiotics) that improve intestinal health and can also improve the immune system. When purchasing a pet food look at the ingredients carefully. Just because it says all natural on the bag doesn't always mean it is. Try to avoid pet foods that use a lot of by-products and minimize or completely eliminate giving her people food. Another possibility is that she may have some kind of intestinal parasite (worms). Either way I would consult your veterinarian and see what he/she recommends.

I would avoid all table scraps, and any other treats besides milk bones. No snausages or rawhides.

Next I would get her dry food that focuses more on Lamb and Rice, instead of beef and or fish and vegetables. No WET FOOD~
But to tell you the truth, sometimes you just get a dog that's gassy. You can't change their digestive systems. Plus most bulldogs are gassy and most farts smell. You can't change that!

I went through the same problem with my Shih Tzu pup. This sweet little 8 week old puppy could blow the windows out of the house when she let one go! People told me pretty much what they are telling you, to just accept that she would smell.

Except for a few wise people who told me to check out her food. They told me to look in the ingredients for any soy or corn products. Low and behold, I found them in her food, so I changed her over to a better quality food (Wellness) with no corn or soy, and I have not had a problem since.

Maybe this will work for you too! Good luck!

My mom and I rescued an American Eskimo who was about 6 years old...we had her for about 9 months when I woke up one morning to see her laying next to my bed in the throws of a grand mal. She ended up being put on phenobarbitol (sp?). She still had seizures, but they became less frequent and less severe. Definitely talk to your vet about the possibility of epilepsy and preventative care. Your dog could have epilepsy and being let out and taken places could just be too much of an active stimuli and that's why you see it then. Our dog passed away last year at the age of 16 and still acted like a puppy, so dogs with epilepsy can definitely live wonderful and loving lives. So don't let yourself get to overwhelmed...there will be some changes in your dog at first if medicated, but their personalities shine through pretty quickly in my experience. Good luck to you guys :)

Some dogs are normally gassy. What kind of food do you have her on? Also does she get any table scraps? Both things can make her gassy. A good food is Natures Recipe Puppy. It is all natural and very easy to digest. Stay away from any wet food keep her on the dry.

What are you feeding him. You should not give any table scraps. Keep him on a good quality puppy food. If that is what you are doing then you should call the vet and ask them. I suppose it would be possible that he could have some digestive problems.

No, it isn't normal. I would be willing to bet that you are feeding the dog non-quality food that is full of fillers and grains. Go to a pet supply, feed store, vet's office and purchase good quality food. Yes, it does cost more...........but you know what, you wanted a pet and it deserves to eat well so that he will feel well. If his skin is itchy a fish/potato blend is helpful.
