I know they are good with kids, and usually get along well with other pets. I also know they are not known to be good watch dogs, but will they at least bark when someone knocks on your door? Do they tend to howl when left alone? I hear they mostly like to sleep the day away. Any information would be great.

Actually I have three. And yes they bark when someone knocks on the door. They are friendly and mine rarely howl unless one of their siblings is missing. If you get one it would be best to get two since they are pack animals and prefer not to be alone.

I have a friend with a Basset and while he's sweet, pretty much all he does is sleep and get into stuff, stealing used socks, underwear, etc (which is common for scent dogs, another friends beagles do the same and our bird dog did it if we didn't close our doors). However if any other dog barks or the doorbell rings, he launches into howling. I've never heard him bark, just howl.

I heard some dogs do well in an apartment,others need room to run. think if the dog you want will do well where you live. Also I have ondog keeps to itself and the other needs lots of attention. Talk to a vet, they know about different breeds habits.
