I guess the topic says it all... I want to make some chili that calls for some California chiles, and I have some Pasillas but no Californias at home. Would the Pasilla make a reasonably good substitute?

Comparatively, Pasilla chilies are slightly sweeter, and less hot than Anaheim chilies.
Anaheim's are long and thin, Pasilla's are not as long, and kinda "wide about the waist".

In Chile Rellanos, both are used -- it's a matter of taste.
A substitute ?? It will pass -- again, a matter of taste.

You might try your dish (you didn't specify) with what you have and see how it goes over.

I've heard that the smaller the chile, the hotter it is. So if you want to make a substitution, the chile should be about the same size. I know the anaheims are pretty big, maybe 4-5" long; how big is the Pasilla?
