Piercing your tongue is NOT something you should do at home. While the tongue is known for healing quickly, you can easily do permanent damage, and/or cause death if you don't know the clinical procedure. There is an Artery that runs through your tongue and if your not a trained professional you could easily puncture this artery and bleed to death so please DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME
Steps

1. Find a business that offers tongue piercings, most tattoo parlors will also do your more exotic peircings. You can look in the phone book, internet directories or simply wander through town but the best way to find one is through reccomendation.
2. Check the credentials of the business. These are people who will be cutting you. You run the risk of diseases such as H.I.V. and HPV if you go to an amateuer outfit. Research their history for infection, ask around.
3. Price should be the last criteria for choosing a place. Your tongue is very important to you, give it the best you can afford. But just so you know, tounge peircings can cost as much as 30-50 dollars. Find a place you're comfortable with, that's clean, with peircers you like and trust. And make sure they autoclave their equipment!
4. Ask to see the autoclave's records--if they don't offer! A good place will be happy to show you how sanitary they are.
5. Find out the opening times of your chosen establishment, and book an appointment.
6. Ask to see the peircer's portfolio. Unless they're hacks, they'll be proud of their work and be happy to show you.
7. Eat lots of food prior to your appointment. Long-lasting foods such as pasta and oatmeal are very good choices. You will be unable to handle solid food for at least a day, most professionals will recomend two days before you try solids. Bring a glass or cooler of ice chips for you to suck on after its done. This will help with the swelling. NOTE: Your tongue will swell to TWICE its normal size.
8. Return to your piercer after the swelling has gone down to be refitted for a smaller barbell. The long bar is more likely to damage your teeth. Most people wear a barbell that is 5/8" long.

Tips

* Safety first. Always, safety first.
* If you have a job that requires you to talk alot, try to take a few days off.
* Ice helps keep the swelling down.
* Practice good oral hygine beforehand and after. You Mouth is filled with germs and an infection will be easy to get. If you do get an infection see your doctor.
* If you smoke, quit. Good advice in general, but smoking is very bad for any peircings in your mouth.

Warnings

* DO NOT bring your own barbell for the peircing. The barbell that will be used is longer than the average barbell you buy, but this allows room for your tongue to swell. You can always have the piercer change the barbell once your tongue is no longer swollen
* If your tongue DOES become infected,--DON'T TAKE THE JEWELRY OUT! An Infection is a lot easier to treat if you have an open wound, then if you take the barbell out and let the hole close. The mouth tries to close holes quickly--like a canker sore, so it can close over the surface and trap the infection inside. Tongue-peircings are usually trouble-free, but if you do have a problem, or just aren't sure about something, go back to the peircer.
* DO NOT use Listerine. This will kill any bacteria, but like most cases, some of the bacteria in the mouth is good for us, and Listerin will kill it all causing a yeast like infection of the mouth. It is also very bad to use alcohol containing mouthwash on a new piercing. Use a mouthwash that doesn't contain alcohol, or salt water rinses.
* The symptoms of thrush are a discolored, white or yellow, carpet like tongue, and dry mouth. If you do get thrush try to eat more dairy, preferable Yogurt because of the live active cultures found in it that will help breed the good bacteria.

errm did you really ask that question??? would you seriously even attempt it if some one said yes its safe??? there is a reason tongue piercings are expensive!!! you have to be a highly trained individual to do this particular one as so much can go wrong!! 1. pierce the main nerve bundle in your tongue! you wont be able to feel or taste or in some cases even talk again!! 2. you have a rather important artery nestled in here, puncture that and well lets just hope you live next door to A&E!! 3. infection!!!!!!!!!!! even having this done at the most reputable establishment is no grantee you wont pick one up in fact a lot of people do get infections even after Professional work as this is the human mouth!! full of nasty critters that almost always infect this piercing to some degree its just that a bad infection can have severe consequences!! (SEE POINTS 1 & 2). 4. if you are still thinking about this piercing even by a professional after reading this then you are completely stark raving bonkers and I hope it all goes well for you, I really do! save the money and talk to people who are knowledgeable in the matter, be safe.x good luck

no it is not safe at all! you dont knwo what you are doing;. you dont know your anatomyl. there are large areteries in yoru tongue and if you puncture one you can literally bleed to death. if you get lucky and dont bleed to death. you can still hit the arteries. get an infection which can travel down down to your heart and give you a heart infection which can also kill you. and yes these are all true. you also risk chipped teeth cause you dont knwo what size jewelry you will need to accomidate swelling. you dont knwo what material (matal) to use. you dont have the proper sterilization techniques... (autoclave) to sterilize all of the equiptment you will be using. and NO boiling them in water or using rubbing alchohol on them is not doing anything.. it may be sanitizing but not sterilizing... thre is a difference. im guesing you are young and your parents arent letting you. cause if you are old enough you would be smart enough to save your money and get it professionally done. that being said... your parents will knwo that you did. you wont be able to talk for abotu 4 days.. you will talk funny cause yoru tongue is so swollen and also they wont be to happy takign you to the emergency room cause you have your tongue infected cause you pierced it yourself, and im guessing you dont even know the aftercare either.. wait till you are older. there are too many risks involved. save your money... and get it done professionally. thats why there are professionals otu there! they know what they are doing. you have no idea. and nothing good will come out of it..

No, absolutely it is not safe to do such a disgusting thing . What on earth will you get out of it besides a great big expense when your tongue literally rots away at the roots . What a shame you don't have someone close to you who has some brains and tells you the score . Wake up .

read my lips don't do it, don't pierce anything yourself...especially yout tongue....if you put your finger on the bottom part of your tongue, you'll feel lots of VEINS....and NERVES...and if you poke a hole in one of them you could seriously cause problems.not to mention the higher risk of tooth and gum damage, because you didn't put it in the proper place, also steriliization, could you imagine the infection you could get if you used and unsterile needle, not to mention you dont even know what size needle to use, and I bet you random bought a tongue ring at claire's or a store like that. same the trouble go to a clean and reputable piercer. I wonder if you'll even listen to me. everyone else who answered this question has also said NO....so that should be a wake up call.....grow up spend the $25-$30 and go see a pro, before you end up in huge amounts of trouble.

It is FAR from safe to pierce your own tongue.

Save your money and have a professional piercer do it. You'll be a lot happier and better off and SAFER!
