We're all born atheists, actually. "Ignorant" of the concept of a god. In that respect, we're all born without belief in such a concept and are therefore atheists.
Being an atheist as an adult requires REFUSING to buy into ridiculous concepts like "god". Atheism is a recognition of reality and an acceptance of the only logical conclusion which can be reached by reason and rationality.

For many, unfortunately, it was a matter of environment. The old "nature vs. nuture" question. All we can do is pray that they see the "light" before it is too late for them. By the way, welcome on board, Brother. YBIC ps. To all who think that ignorance is the same as stupid, look up the word. It means never having been taught. Wether it is the truth, reading & writing or anything else.

Actually ignorance is never questioning what you believe in. That would describe religious followers, who are told what to believe from their parents all throughout their formative years. If someone has read the bible, for example, and does not question how their god, who is perfect, wrote something that is full of contradictions, hence not perfect, then they actually are the ignorant ones for turning a blind eye to it.

Everyone is born ignorant.
The question is why do some religious fanatics choose to stay ignorant?

I am Christian, but I think that is disrespectful. Some may be ignorant as in meaning uninformed, but then we all are "born that way".

Many atheists know more about the beliefs of religions than those who consider themselves members of those religions.
The irony of your question is that it's actually the process of asking questions and thinking critically that led most atheists away from religion and towards atheism...

LOL. however i think everyone is born agnostic. (not knowing whats out there).
atheists deny the existance, religious folk have extreme faith in the existance of. but if a child grows up never being taught what to believe, but keeps some kind of open mind i think he will be agnostic. if hes narrowminded he will become atheist and deny the idea because they were never taught it.

I used to be baptist. Then, I started to think. I started to think because the thinking the church was using didn't make sense. So, I chose to stop being ignorant and studied and studied and studied the bible. My studies led be to become and atheist, sort of like before I went to church only smarter.

If you took a child and never told or exposed it to anything that has to do with God or religion of any kind, and they grew up that way, they would never know it existed or not.....It is what we have been exposed to that leads us to believe in things or not believe in things....
