The one place I know of people combining tattoos with religion is in the prisons.

When, I see someone with a religious tatto, it is a strong signal that that person got it in prison.

Well, it depends on what religion you are. If you are a Christian, though, yes; it's VERY ignorant, seeing that there are many scriptures in the Bible against tattooing. For example, Leviticus 19:28: Ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print any marks upon you: I am the LORD.
Tattooing, of course, marks the skin. One might argue that the Bible only forbids it if it's for the dead. This is a specious argument. Notice that the Bible says that printing marks upon the skin is forbidden, period. Furthermore, wouldn't it be strange if the Bible allowed self-mutilation (for example, cutting or a similar form of self-injurious behavior) as long as it's not for the dead? That doesn't make sense.
So, if one is a Christian, then it would be highly ignorant to get a permanent tattoo.

It depends on the religion.

TRUE Christians should not.
It downgrades the body which is "A Temple of The GOD."

If you feel strongly enough about it and know without a doubt that your mind will never change then go for it.
