Hia, I would like to buy my first belay device, so that I can start doing some climbing at my local uni wall. Eventually I want to get into mountain walking and mountaineering up in the hills, both in summer and in winter, so it needs to be ok for outdoor as well as indoor use.

Can anyone offer there opinions on good quality belay devices?

Thanks.

If your primary interest is climbing, get an ATC or a grigri. (or other self-locking device) If you're doing gym climbing, get the ATC. If you're doing technical mountain climbing, get the grigri. Winter, go with an ATC, not the grigri.

There are two main choices that I am aware of: the figure 8 and the ATC. Both work well for belaying and rappelling. The figure 8 allows for a quicker descent if desired while rappelling. The ATC (air traffic controller) is also a good choice. It probably comes down to personal preference as to which is better. I would definitely buy new since you don't know the history of used devices, and if they have been dropped they should be retired.
