How to establish North American Indian heritage?

My daughter is part Indian. We have never "legally" established this. In other words she has no "band" connection. Her ancestors on her Dad's side are all from Canada and have Indian blood - especially her Grandmother. I cannot get information from them - they are very elderly and in a nursing home in Sturgeon Falls Ontario and don't understand how important this is too us. They only speak French and my husband is now deceased. I know names of the great great grandparents but have no marriage dates, birth dates etc. How can I find out about her heritage? Also, dumb question - will she be able to be associated with a "band" here in Michigan? Is there a genetic test for Indian blood? I apologize if that's a dumb question - just thought I'd ask. Any help will be greatly appreciated!!!!

Hey suzycrmchz,

You need to get their birth records! find out who has them. Get there marriage records, and all the family photos you can. Your question(s) are not dumb, they are difficult, and multi-faceted.

The Dawes roles (see below) are where you establish your lineage for her. Perhaps the Grandparents have already done that, perhaps they have not. It will require proof. Your husbands records, his parents, and theirs.

There is genetic testing>however if you want to qualify for benefits in any way you have prove that her ancestors were included in the indian register which is included in the canadian bill of rights .
