I don't think its important, if its just to pass the time, and you don't plan on meeting them or starting up a relationship, but if you have those objectives in mind prior to chatting on line, then you should definitely ask for photos, even though you will never know if that is actually the person you are speaking with.

I think in a way getting to know someone online without seeing what they look like is a good thing. Why should looks make a difference?
Personality and whether you get on well with the person or not is much more important. Maybe the online chatting thing is an advantage in this respect. It means you are not blinded by looks alone and take the person for other merits as well.

Since this is Singles & Dating I'd say if I were planning on actually meeting/going out with them then yea, I'd want to know what they looked like beforehand. And since I have pics in all my profiles they typically already know what I look like.
But just for chat online only...it matters not.
