I want to know what mp3, mpeg, avi, wma, and other suffixes mean, and what software I need to play the files properly.

MPEG is a video compression format. Played on Windows Media Player or any one of a thousand other video players. It's the most common computer video format.

MP3 is the audio portion of an MPEG (official name is MPEG audio layer 3) - it's just been separated so it's audio-only. It's lossy, meaning that there's not as much information stored in an MP3 as the original audio recording, but it's usually good enough. Played on Windows Media Player or WinAmp, which is an AOL product.

AVI is a video format, played best on DiVX player.

WMA stands for Windows Media Audio, it's a windows-only audio format, played in media player. WMV is Windows Media Video, played in (you guessed it) Windows Media Player.

You can also find video in RM (real media) and RA (Real Audio) formats, which are for Real Player.

mp3 = MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3. They are just different forms of rendered audio or video. They are just different ways to compress the media and make it so that a computer can read it. As for software to play the files, windows media player is free and can play all of them. Also, there is realplayer, and most other programs when you search for a player, because those types of files are used a lot.
