Say you meet someone online or through personals, and you converse for a couple of months. Spiritually, mentally, emotionally, everything about this person is perfect. Just by talking to this person you know that they are The One For You. So you decide to meet, and the love of your life is 50lbs overweight with crooked teeth and bad skin. Do you work with the faults or move on to the next person?

This person never said anything about their looks before you two met.

It's just a hypothetical question. I'm just wondering what evertyone thinks.

It depends on how honest he was about his looks before I met him. If he warned me at the beginning that he was no stud muffin and I kept talking to him...well, he warned me, didn't he?

I could get over the 50 pounds (he could always lose some of the extra weight) and the crooked teeth, but if his skin were reeeeeeeeeeeally that bad and a dermatologist couldn't fix it...I have to say I would find that kinda gross. But that's just me.

EDIT: He never said anything about his looks in the hypothetical question? I would suspect that he's very physically unattractive. Guys who are even AVERAGE looking usually think they're hot stuff and can't wait to show you what they look like (which gives them the opportunity to ask what you look like). If he avoided the topic of looks altogether for a long time, I would wonder.

Personally, I would view online dating as only a half-step up from a blind date. So, I wouldn't be seriously emotionally involved before meeting the person because there are just too many details about a person that you cannot possibly discern without having met in person.

One of those details is chemistry (or lack thereof). Even when pictures are shared, you still do not know what this person's personal habits, manners and even hygiene are like until you've met in person.

Short answer to your question: I would move on.

If you were really starting to love this person, ask yourself why his looks are important enough to outweigh the rest.

On the other hand, maybe he needs to work on his health and appearance before he's ready to be in a relationship, and you should be friends at most for a while.

Looks do matter, because they tell you a lot about the person's health, both physical and mental/emotional. Just don't make them everything.

to me personally looks matter to a certain extent.....i have to be somewhat attracted to the other person.....they dont have to be a model but somewhat attractive...you know what i mean. i'm not shallow, but it's a little bit of looks and personality. if i met someone in this situation i probably would just stay friends

Move in because no one likes to admit it but looks play an important part in a healthy relationship.

anybody who lies to me doesn't deserve my trust Period.
But to answer the original question, looks are a personal preference thing. Everybody has a set of things that are important to them. For most males, looks are pretty important. For many females, looks are not as important as other things.
