It's pee.

Feline Spraying (also called marking) is a cat depositing a small amount of urine on vertical surfaces, such as furniture, doorways and walls. The spraying cat may be seen to back into the area, the tail may quiver, and with little or no crouching the cat sprays the urine.

Spraying is marking behavior, not a litter box problem. The cat does not need to pee, he is leaving a message for other cats.

It can actually be either. After I moved out of my parents house, the family cat, of whom I was the favorite, started pooping in my old bedroom and bathroom. The vet told my mom that some cats pee to spray and other cats poop. The poop is much more rare, though.

Cat "spray" is actually urine. Just like a dog hiking his leg on a tree or fire hydrant to mark his territory, cats "spray" urine on things to mark their territory (among other methods like rubbing their heads on things). And all cats can spray. Tomcats (intact males) are typically the culprits with a distinct odor to their urine, but females can spray as well. AND cats can spray for many different reasons other than territory marking, but I won't go into all that.

actually, cats do spray urine to mark their territory. it is common for cats and it fairly is area of the communique between cats to verify and define obstacles and reassure the cat that the area is wide-unfold. Marking of territory includes the spraying of not purely urine, yet different pheromones from glands strategically located on the cat's physique (the facial area, around the tail or maybe interior the foot pads) better than 17 distinctive components performing as chemical markers have been present day in cats.

I think it's a secretion from a special gland... it does smell like pee though. I'm sure someone else told me it was pee. If your cat is spraying he may be feeling unsettled.
