There are different languages called "Chinese". The official language of the People's Republic and the Republic of China is Mandarin, a northern language introduced by the Manchurian Qing dynasty.

xin nian kuai le is Mandarin

Gong Hee Fat Choy is Cantonese, now spoken mostly in Hong Kong and amongst some overseas Chinese communities in the UK, Malaysia, etc.

sin nee hua hee is Hokkien, spoken by the pre-Chiang Kai Shek Taiwanese Chinese population and in Singapore, Penang, and parts of East Malaysia.

The cantonese for Happy New Year is Sun Leen Fi Lok. However the words for Happy Chinese New Year is Gung Hey Fat Choi. It's confusing but most Chinese is!!!

Strictly speaking, the Chinese celebrate the Spring Festival during Chinese 'new year'. It marks the ending of winter and the start of spring. CNY is a recent innovation. Anyway, the better greeting is 'xing nien kaui le' whereas 'gong...' mean have a prosperous time.

Gong Xi Fa Cai!! Happy Chinese New Year!! Chinese friends taught me. They live in Cambodia so it would be Mandarin Chinese, not Cantonese.
