Ah, you have to do the serious work yourself. You should get familiar with GENFORUM. Go to the site, put in a SURNAME, and it will tell you how many forums for that surname there are. Sometimes there are none, sometimes there are many, and regionalized. There you can get serious with people interested in the same surnames. Search their postings, and post your own questions. You will meet distant cousins if you hang out long enough there.
You should also check out LDS Family Search site, it has a ton of great information. Search for people in many ways, last name only, specify a Birth, or just a name and location, try its FREE

I am. My research centers aound the Pack, Farley, Carper, Wood, Lucas, Morgan, Mathis, Weigle and Saville surnames in what is now West Virginia, Wilken, Godchen, Wyssmann and Affolter in Nebraska, Cady, Hotchkiss, Zimmerman and Casselberry in Pennsylvania and upstate New York.
