throughout history we've always had them, egyptian, grecko-roman,, celtic, mayan--where are the gods of the new millenium? where are the gods of america, for that matter, since no god worshipped in america actually came from this country? Isn't it time to update? We need gods that can relate to our modern lives, the stresses and pressures of todays society instead of gods more comfortable washing their clothes on a rock by the riverbank.

We do. Surely you haven't forgotten the great religions of Communism, Fascism, and Consumerism? We hold mystical beliefs that buying lots of stuff somehow makes us better people, and if we somehow buy enough electric nose hair trimmers and exercise bikes and uncomfortable shoes, we will be happier. Stalin and Hitler also tried to make themselves into demi-gods in the eyes of their people, and their political systems more like faiths.
In addition to the evil gods of modern times, we also have the fair-to-decent objects of worship. Some people will worship Gaia, whether they know the word or not, and their crusading spirit and determination are why we have any environmental protection laws or wildlife refuges at all.
Some people worship science, and while there will be people who will disagree, I believe that reason and logic are statistically positive influences on humanity. People will say it will lead you towards a world without morals. However, if one were to treat both logic and empathy as holy things...we'll see how this turns out.

We do have gods, especially here in America. Sports idols, music stars, TV personalities and anyone else you might choose to worship. We also have items as gods. Your brand new car, golf clubs, boat, motor home or whatever else you've bought that consumes all your attention. You make sure it's well taken care of and love it above anything else.

We make gods everyday and don't even realize it! Not in the institutional "go to temple/make a burnt offering" kind of way, but anything we put in front of serving God when we know within our hearts we could be doing more for Him, becomes and "idol" or "god" of sorts. Besides, as far as the "graven image" aspect is concerned, one of the Ten Commandments directly states that "Ye shall have NO OTHER GODS before Me."

We don't make Gods anymore because the one true God has made himself known to the world. Just the majority of the world rejected him.

We do - UFO's space-men, aliens, ghosts... ignorant humans will always make gods though now they try to dress it up in scientific language to make it sound more credible. Ignorance is the real enemy.

I'd like to believe that it is because we are finally educating ourselves in practical science, but in reality i believe it is the fact that the current major religions have become societal norms and seeing as how they aren't too friendly when it comes to others believing otherwise, major religions do not allow others to develope their own beliefs without sharp criticism. Add to that the ability to instill "religion" during the developing years of children and you tend to have less flexibility. Not to mention the decline of education in modern america... education promotes practical science and logical reasoning. Two things sorely lacking from modern america. Viva la Zues.
