I would like to go on a bike ride on the great allegheny Passage, and the Tidewater Patomac Heritage route. It seems a waste of time to do it without raising some money for somebody. How can I somebody who has never done this type of thing before get people/ companies to contribute to my cause? Any suggestions?

There's a great tool called Chip In -- http://www.chipin.com/

This site can help you raise money within your own social network, and if you have your own website, you can publicize your event and have the site manage your fund collection.

Come up with a detailed plan including route and stops you plan to make including what major stores or landmarks you will be passing by then contact each of those places and suggest your plan to the Boss not the manager. Talk to the local news radio and video and ask if they would include a short mention in their report the week you plan to go. Get some Major business' to hold some sort of outdoor event on the day and work out the kinks yourself. That's the best I can think of.

i would run it by as many people as possible and next, talk to a radiostation and see if theyre willing to set a deal that every mile or something you ride you maybe get $2 for charity or something like that
then run it by another radiostation and maybe by a government official like the mayor of your town

just keep trying anyone who you think needs more publicity, and that you know they would pay for more people to like them

cuz you know anyone who donates to charity is a good person in peoples eyes so politicians would probably go for it
start your price per mile low then every radiostation or person you keep it there so instead of ending with $1000 for charity from ONE radiostation have 20 radiostations and $20,000 keep getting more and more radiostations and sponsors
