I've heard that some people say that it's better to wait until your child is 24 + months before you start pottytraining. But I'll have to say that, if you feel that your little one is ready for his/her latest challenge: go for it! At first, only try it during the daytime - nighttimes can still be reserved for diapers until he/she is potty trained during the day (it'll make things much easier!). I potty trained my little girl by taking her to the bathroom twice every hour. I sat down with her, gave her a book to 'read' & did the same. Even if nothing happened, we just sat there so that she could get used to it. I also bought one of those potties that you can push a button for music each time 'something happened'! When she felt confident enough, I brought in a chart with all the days of the week written down. Each time she successfully went to the loo (with or without me!), she could put a sticker on her 'I'm a big girl now' chart. Good luck with it! (And don't loose hope if it doesn't happen within a week!)

Remove the diaper and get ready with the Folex carpet cleaning spray.

The more time they spend without a diaper the better. I also asked my kids to sit on the potty every 20 - 30 minutes, if they hadn't already gone. Once they went I would allow about an hour to pass before asking them to sit again.

I bought a couple of potty book reserved for reading while my little one sits on the potty and after we finished reading we get up and wipe (even though there is nothing to wipe) and wash hands, which teaches them good hygene habits from the get go.

Both my kids showed an interest in the potty at 18 months, but my boy didn't potty train until he was 30 months and my girl potty trained fully (no diaper at night by her own choice) at 22 months.

My boy (who is now 5 years old) still sleeps with a diaper at night, because he is a heavy sleeper and after about 2 months of trying to get him to sleep without a diaper he still wets the bed, which was taking it's toll on the bedding, being washed everyday.

My daughter (who is now 30 months) has made two accidents as a result of having too much fun and not wanting to stop the game at the time.

Do you have an agenda? Otherwise I would ask your child. 17 months seems pretty early to me, but every child is different. I started with my daughter after her second birthday because we thopught it was the thing to do. It lasted a few months and she was not ready and we stopped. We waited several months and asked her if she wanted to start wearing panties and she said yes and then we started again. I would bring extra panties and a change of clothes with me everywhere I went. I would set a timer every ninety minutes or so and have her go potty or at least try and after a few months and some accidents she was potty trained. Patients is key. You have to be on their time clock and listen to them. Sometimes we as parents forget that children are little people. Best of luck to you.

As a parent of 5 year old twins, and a nanny of 2 other little kids, all I can say is they have to be ready. You can exhaust yourself trying to bribe them with candy, or throwing a mini party everytime they go, blowing tons of money on every potty book and dvd; but really why do that? 17 months is too young. When your child is ready they will let you know.

yeah, wait until they're closer to 2. It'll be much easier and they'll understand better....however, if you're determined to do it this young, consistancy. Just put panties (or undies) on them and take them to the rest room regularly and be preprared to sit for long periods of time! Good luck. Potty training...YUCK!! ;)

wait till he/she is a little older. i know one person whom had their child potty trained by 2, but honestly i believe the odds are against you. try waiting till 2 - 2 1/2. you'll probably have better luck and less regressing.

id just wait. sometimes if you push them too early or even if they start to early they regress and often dont want to potty train for good until a lot later.

That is a little early. Usually its good to wait until 2 or even after that for some. Some are just not ready. Unless your baby is showing signs that he or she is ready, then just wait.

is she or he showing signs of being ready? dry diapers in the am, taking off own diapers, talking about wanting to use the big potty?
