I have read it cover to cover more than that, and I have NOT come across such a prohibition. In fact, after the Jews entered the promis land, tha land was divided up by "lots" (ie a lottery). The idea most likely comes from the fact that the Roman soldiers at the foot of The Cross cast lots for Jesus' robe. In fact, I am is such financial straights right now that I am trusting in God to let me "win" the money I need. I've been out of work for 1 1/2 yr. YBIC

Not that I am very religious any more, but as a child I had it drummed into me by the state. To answer your question, is there not a section in the bible where the Roman soldiers played dice for Christ's possessions. Christ's overthrow of the money changers may also indicate this. I do not think the arguement against gambling can be that strong because many rural Catholic and Protestant churches raised funds from bingos and card parties.

The bible shows gambling in a bad light when it is mentioned, like when the guards were casting lot for the garments of Jesus. But the real issue taught in the bible is that money earned is blessed but when hastily gained not blessed. I can not now take the time to give the references. Also gambling is motivated by selfishness (coveting) which is contrary to a Godly Christian. The pursuit of money (Mammon) is not right. Matt 6:33 seek God first and everything else will be added. Sorry I'm at work and just throwing out my thoughts. Hopefully it helps.

muyuni,
You won't find an explicit reference to prohibit gambling or lottery participation, but as you know, a lot of people frown on this kind of activity.
Why?
Because, the entire tone of the Bible is for people to focus all of their resources and efforts so that they contribute to society. Gambling and lottery participation do not; and such participations have secondary and indirect effects that cause problems in society. For example, they can be habit forming (you already knew that *grin*). They can ruin peoples' lives and destroy marital relationships, and divert a person from constructive contributions to her/his society.

it doesn't say not to purchase lottery tickets. Common sense tells you not to, but not the bible. Now some forms of gambling are more profitable, like say, driving to work, 9,999 times out of a 10,000 you will be fine, it's that 1 time out of 10,000 that you don't worry about. Common sense says you shouldn't be worried about winning the lottery either, seeing you won't succeed in 1 out of 1,000,000. But if you wan't to waste your time and money, then it's great, we all waste our time and money on different things.

You need to use discretion with this one. It comes under the stewardship section the Bible talks about. Be good stewards. If you want to buy a lottery ticket, do it once and see if God blesses you, if not, don't do it again.

I haven't found anywhere in the Bible that expressly says that gambling is a sin, either.
Most of the people who oppose gambling seem to do so on the basis that : (i) it is motivated by greed; (ii) it is addictive, and causes some people to loose everything that they have; and, (iii) in order for you to win, other people (who may be addicted) have to lose, you you are taking their money.
