The consequences in the self esteem of someone who's been bullied at school are not that different to the ones someone at work has. Bullying is pretty much school harassment. Why don't schools give it as much importance as jobs give sexual harassment?

This is possible one of the most intelligent questions I have seen on here.

In the workplace it is called "sensitivity training", and may not be as much for bullying, but for people to see how their unthinking behavior (comments, physical contact) can adversely affect other people. In case you did not already know, there is law against all forms of harrasment in the workplace, not just sexual. That would include race, beliefs, physical attributes, medical conditions, etc.

This would not be a bad idea to me, because kids can be so damn cruel. If they knew the real harm they were doing, they may not do what they do. If bullies were singled out and made to go to this instead of the BS behavior clinic and stare at walls or copy the dictionary, they may get a taste of their own medicine from friends, and MAYBE learn something.

Bullying needs to be addressed in elementary school. Waiting until high school is too late. Sexual harassment should be taught in middle, junior high and high school along with advanced bullying class. These rules should be in their handbooks and read aloud to them at least twice a year. Self discipline by far is what schools should be teaching along with reading, writing, and arithmetic, computer, science and history, etc.

Schools spend most of their efforts conforming to and documenting their conforming to ... federal, state and local regulations.

Step 1 to improve education; reduce the paperwork
Step 2; replace gym classes with martial arts classes. Kids don't need to learn to play volleyball, they need to learn to protect themselves. Bullies of all ages don't respect society's rules, they respect people who can hurt them back.

Public school creates followers.
Private schools teach people to lead the people who went to public school.
