The person in the cubicle next to mine keeps whistling. I am glad they are happy, but it is very distracting. I don't want to be rude, but want them to stop. What should I do?

I never thought that they may not even realize they are whistling. But could be true. Thanks

Sing some opera. Maybe they'll get the point.

Seriously, my wife is a "hummer". And she'll get stuck on the same line, over and over which I find very annoying. Sometimes I'll ask her to please move on to the next line of the song and she's usually not even aware she's humming.

Your cubicle neighbor may not realize it either. Just point it out gently and give them a chance to stop.

I agree with the person above who said just to firmly but politely ask them to stop. However, I went through a stage in my life once when I whistled without realizing I was doing it. It was some kind of nervous habit. So, I would keep reminding him to stop and patiently wait, because he may be like me and not even realize he's doing it!

The world is full of little annoyances. We have to pretty much deal with the harmless ones. Get some headphones.

I believe, too, that whistling on humming or singing are not always signs of someone's being happy. I believe, instead, they are sometimes things people do when they are very unhappy and they are making some kind of effort to act otherwise or do something that gets them out of a deep "inwardness". Or else it is something such as when a person goes into a deep level of "inwardness" they kind of go on automatic pilot and do seemingly unconscious things.

When you start to feel irritated just remind yourself that there are people in the world who are starving to death and who have cancer or sick children - and maybe it won't seem as irritating.

Step into their cubicle without saying a word. When they turn around, punch them in the mouth as hard as you can. A person can not whistle with a fat lip.

If it was my choice, I would just blare my music. I usually listen to opera, so it will freak a lot of people out.

I had a classmate who whistled a lot. I usually just nudged him or made a joke about the topic at hand. Since you have the issue of cubicles, I don't know what to do...

Oh gosh I hate that - I have people here at work who sing out loud sometimes too, and "loud talkers". Ugh! Annoying. Unfortunately I've never done anything about it because even though the offenders are being rude, I find it hard to confront them. If this is distracting to work-related phone calls and meetings though, ask them nicely to SHHHHHHHHHH! Otherwise, most of the time you just have to try and tune them out.

Say exactly that. "I'm very glad that you are happy but I am finding your whistling a little bit distracting, would you mind stopping?" They probably don't even realise they are doing it, let alone that you find it annoying.

Wow that would drive me nuts!! I would be screaming at them in like half a second. But if you want to be nice you could just tell them politely that you find it distracting and ask if they would mind not doing it.

Start singing to the tune they're whistling...that might be pretty annoying to them (maybe they will get the hint and stop whistling?)
