Well,
when you pop in the Win 98 disk, it should take you through steps to format the hard drive and install the operating system. Hope this helps....

You should have a CD that you can boot up with that will give yo the options to format & etc. Once that is done, put in your Windows 98 system CD and load it. You probably have a drivers disk with that old of a system also, but it should pretty well guide you through the installation.

Windows 98se comes with a boot disk. After you boot this disk, you can select the windows installation from there, or you can go to the command DOS line, where you can Fdisk(partition) the disk. You will always need a bootable diskette, since Windows 98se CD isn´t bootable. If you don´t have the original 98se diskette, you can download a bootable DOS diskette from the internet. Installation will begin from the DOS environment...

I hope you have this well thought out, because you may find yourself with a pretty much useless computer.

What are you upgrading from?
What are you downgrading from?

Big problem going from Win 98 to XP was that 90% of your drivers became obsolete. Same can happen if you go backwards. All your installed drivers may not work.

Now, if it's an old computer that you are upgrading from W95, then there are many more problems depending on why you are working on this old computer.

Good Luck
