Explain what happened to a title clerk, and file for a lost title. The clerk should also be able to help you locate who owned the dealership and is able to sign the car to you.

I would start by calling the state, give them your information and see if the papers have been processed and mailed yet. It can sometimes take a while for it to all go through. But they should have all of the information. If they tell you it's been sent out already, find out the date, and if it's been a while since the date they sent it, say a week or so, give the postal service a call and they'll let you know where to go from there. I'm thinking that the bank must have had his title, if he had a loan on the vehicle. If that's the case, and they didn't give it to either you or him when he paid off his debt, then they may still have it. In either case, if you didn't sign the title, then it probably didn't make it as far as the state office. If you did, and you mailed it out personally, you should be able to track it down no problem. Good luck! Hopefully you're able to find it!

If you don't have a clear title in the name of the person who sold it to you, you have a car that can't be registered since the person you gave money to had no right to sell it to you. It belongs to who ever is named on the title.

All VIN's are good. There is no such thing as a "clean VIN'

Yes, you can have it towed, but that won't get you a new clean title, it will just get it our of your way.

You might involve the police, they can check to see if it's stolen anyway.

Can either go thru DMV and claim for lost title, or salvaged title, depends on how much the car is worth and if your DMV will allow for salvage title. Lost or salvaged, it is still a pain!

Call the STATE DMV office. Advise them the lien is payed off; but you still need to transfer the title into your name and ask them what the next step is. THe Credit union held title as lien holder they should have notified the state the lien was released and they should have done the transfer then. You could also call them; but they should have kicked it to the state by now

YOUR PROB IS SOLVED! tell the dmv you need a bonded title, long story short, letters will be sent to last registered owners asking them if they still own the car, if they dint respond a new title will be issued to you.

if the person who sold it to the person you bought it from signed the title, then i don't think that you need to go through all that. i would contact (going there is the best bet) your local DMV or clerk of courts where you get titles transferred.
