The thyroid gland regulates growth. In adults, it co -ordinates you body functions. Lots of people have this disease. It's doesn't get worse or debilitate you. You take the pill on an empty stomach to make sure it gets absorbed, because it's a tiny pill. Empty stomach means you can't eat for a 30 minutes before or after taking the pill.
The main symptoms of hypothyroidism are weight gain and feeling sleepy.

Hypothyroid means her thyroid (gland located in her throat) is under-active. Symptoms can be weight gain, tired all the time and depression. Her T-4 (thyroxine) and T-3 (Trilodothyronine) levels are at an imbalance. This can have long term consequences due to raised cholesterol and fats in the liver. Many experience heart palpitations and high blood pressure. The meds she is on are used to regulate her hormone levels and absorb best when on an empty stomach. When managed properly she will live a full normal life. Others wont even be able to tell unless she mentions it.

In adults, hypothyroidism is mostly due to auto immune thyroiditis. The body makes antibodies, leading to deficiency of thyroid hormone. This slows down the metabolism. The person is sleepy, lethargic, slow, overweight in spite of lack of appetite and feels excessively cold. She will have to take thyroxine life- long.
