Brick Lane, London, on a Sunday morning was a good place for fresh bagels. Or go to local Jewish area and buy them. In Manchester it is Leicester Road, Salford. Fill it with smoked salmon and cream cheese. "Oh Vey my boy!"

Taste is a very strange thing, I have been to the USA, (not New York) great place with great people.
I used to go for a coffee and noticed people buying these 'bagels' they looked OK (the bagels not the people buying them)! They dunked them broken up into their coffee? I thought I must check these things out and bought a couple , they must have been the worse lump of stale bread I have ever tasted, no wonder they got dunked into the coffee before eating!!
I have seen them in the UK and even tried one yet again, (I must be a glutton for punishment it tasted the same).
I think I bought my UK one in a bakers called Greggs, who are excellent at everything else they bake, but its either just me and my taste buds or bagels should be strictly reserved for pigeon feeding, a beak full of bagel will stop them ever taking off again!

A bagel's a bagel.........Try your local supermarket they're sure to have 'New York Style' Bagels.
It's not so much the bagel as the choice and variety of sumptuous fatty fillings the new yorkers put in their bagels. Now that really hits the spot!

As a native New Yorker who now lives in California, I have given up on finding a decent bagel. I have also given up on finding a decent slice of pizza. There are wonderful things to eat here, just not bagels or pizza. I advise you to eat bagels if and when you're in New York, and stick to what's good where you are.
The person who wrote that s/he observed people breaking their bagels up and dunking them in coffee must have been mistaken. Bagels are never dunked in coffee; donuts are.
