Most people go wireless nowaday. I also don't use my landline phone (~$35/month), except to get faxes and ADT security monitoring service.

What is other alternatives?

ADT Security can supply a GSM Module that allows you to use the mobile network, although this is really intended for back up to your land line. Cost around $1500+ AUD plus you need a simcard which costs about $10 a month. These are very rough quotes. The problem with the mobile back-up and VOIP internet is the unreliability of the telecommunication service they use. A landline is always on, while broadband varies (especially with Wireless Broadband which is still in its infancy in Australia). Mobiles still drop out to this day, especially when the infrastructure is overloaded. So really the land-line is still the best option for a few years yet.

The security companies would prefer that you use a landline phone to connect to central monitoring for reliability. After all, when the power goes out at your home, you can pretty much guarantee that your phone line is still up.

One could consider VoIP such as the one suggested earlier, but only as long as you have a UPS on your broadband modem and telephone adaptor.

Ask ADT if they provide equipment and support for cellular or IP (internet) monitoring. The technology exists, and companies outside of ADT provide services which support cellular and IP monitoring. It just costs quite a bit to get, though, so I wonder if ADT would subsidize it through monthly charges or a longterm contract. Couldn't hurt to ask.

I gotta go to my forum and look up the security company! no you don't need a land-line anymore...since so many ppl have VoIP now. there are several home security companies now specializing in home security for VoIP...and with the fax, I can use it if I set my baud-rate to 6900 and use the overseas mode! try it! also on my VoIP phone I have one analog outlet I plug the fax machine in...old-fashioned stand alone faxes do better if you have VoIP anyway.....

since you already have ADT here it is....
