I can answer from personal experience:

I help animals by volunteering at the local Humane Society two days a week after work. At the shelter I'm an adoption counselor and it's my responsibility to interview potential adoptors to make sure they are going to be good, responsible pet owners. I also work as a foster parent. My husband and I take litters of kittens, either with or without a Mama, that are too young or sick to be put up for adoption. We keep them until they are old enough or healthy enough to go back. When they go up for adoption I promote the heck out of them and the entire litter is usually adopted within one week.

If I wasn't here, I would like to think there would be someone else willing to do what I do to help the animals at the shelter...
