Californication is a portmanteau of California and fornication, seen on bumper stickers in the state of Oregon during the late 1970s and early 1980s. The stickers said "Don't Californicate Oregon" in reference to the ongoing influx of Californians into Oregon. This shift was brought about largely by the completion of California Interstate 5 in 1964. Prior to that time, the main route into Oregon from California was through the twisty, two-lane Oregon Highway 99. Towns including: Medford, Eugene and Portland have tripled or more in size since 1964, and this population shift has been added to by the massive movement of both legal and illegal immigrants into the West Coast states from south of the border.

If it wasn't 4 the Chillies I wouldn't have a notion about the meaning of californication. If I just saw the word out of context I would take it to refer to the high levels of promiscuity amongst primarily the social elite and the subcultures of certain parts of California

Well, Keidis became sober around the time Californication was released, and John Frusciante returned to the band after kicking his addictions to heroin and crack cocaine. With him, John brought a different sound and energy to the band, evident of his story of destruction and rebirth. I think that this quote is Kiedis saying, "we did some stuff that we regret, but look what I took from the experience."

Along with the related portmanteau word "Fornicalia", it implies to me the speaker's attitude about the general lax moral standards that are thought to prevail in CA, rather than any particular sexual deviancy.

Contraction of the words California and fornication.
Literally it would mean sex in California. I think in the Chili Peppers song it is referring to shallow Hollywood/California society. (if it feels good, do it).
