All depends on the family. For mine I would do something fun and non-formal.

Generally the 4th of July is very infomal. If you want to have a family gathering, I would print out invitations, such as

You are invited to a party or family gathering on July 4, 2007 starting at 4 p.m
at 123 Oak street, I promise a great time.

On each invitation hand write things such as hot dogs, lemonaid, fire works, watermellon, write these in different colors and styles.

My aunt has a family gathering on the 4th, and she writes them out on patriotic paper.

She tells everyone what day, time, place ect. But its in a paragraph form. She also tells what else is going to go on. Like we've had this for a few years now, and she says that the euchre tournement is going to happen again, and the winners from last year were from the men ________ and the women's________. And any other activities she has there.
We usually have a potluck, where people bring a dish or two to share.

*but thats how she write the invites, and she hands them out, and sometime mails them out too*
